How wide are the actual stepping platform of these running boards?

They are probably around four inches. I put my foot on it and grab the steering wheel and climb in. I really like them. Two people to install them I would recommend.

Is any cutting or modification of the rav4 required?

The product did not fit my vehicle (RAV4 2022), so I ended up returning it back to the vendor.

They fit on my 2022 RAV4 with mud guards. I cut the guards out for a better fit.
