The Fotodiox Collapsible Beauty Dish is the perfect accessory for the on-the-go portrait photographer that may require a quick and easy alternative to bulky, conventional beauty dishes. It uniquely diffuses light to provide high output with moderate feathering. A beauty dish uses a circle of light with an opaque center and an internal light shield that allows for bounce lighting, resulting in rich shadows. It will also provide moderate, round catch lights in the eyes, whereas a soft box will yield larger, angular catch lights. The Fotodiox Pro Collapsible Beauty Dish uses a parabolic reflector to focus light towards a wrapped area. The Fotodiox Pro Collapsible Beauty Dish is unique in that the inner light shield is removable and an inner diffusion baffle can be attached in its place via Velcro, allowing the beauty dish to double as a small portable soft box. The beauty dish also comes with an outer diffusion panel for controlling the sharpness of shadows even further. You can use a combination of the possible light modifiers, such as the outer diffuser cover with the optional 50° honeycomb grid to change the light pattern, creating a wrapped, contrasted look which adds a very dramatic effect. The optional eggcrate grid contains the light to a more tubular pattern for more of a spotlight effect without light spillpatible Strobes: Balcar Flash point IPaul C. Fantastic portable dish that doubles as softbox!
This dish is fantastic! The build quality is of sturdy fiberglass ribs and and high quality fabric. The disc came with a inner diffuser and outer diffuser, they both easily attach with velcro, this make the dish double as a great portable softbox Velcro around the inner rim allows this dish to also accept a 50 degree grid, with or with out the outer diffuser. I have purchased the grid and can say that it installs easily and fits extremely well, not loose or saggy.Assembly is not as quick as a westcott rapid beauty dish, being that each of the 16 ribs need to be locked in place but the dish can can remain installed when folded (not the case with the westcott). I find it easiest to press two opposing ribs down at a time then as the dish tightens to do the the remaining ribs individually.Another plus of Fotodiox is that I can change out the adapter ring to fit whatever light I'm shooting with, or if in the future I decided to switch lighting equipment. Currently shooting with Paul C Buff Einsteins and White Lightings, the adapter fits well and allows for the front of the modifier to be rotated on the light to alight the grid.I bought this dish to have a quick portable beauty dish that could double as a softbox and travel easily, when this dish is folded it will fit nicely into a standard wheelie carry on bag. I had considered the Westcott Rapid Beauty dish and SMDV systems but settled on this because I felt it suited me needs best.

It's not to bad and best with a grid
I have used this for several portrait sessions and it's not bad. I do like it better with a grid. Due to the size you get a lot of light output. I have this on an Einstein light, boom mount with a c-stand. Shooting at 65 watts of power with an 85mm Zeiss lens. When I added the grid, I also used some white foam board for a little bounce of light.Putting the unit together was simple, you do need to use for to get everything in place. As for taking it apart, it's a lot of work. I'll keep it together for now. It is pretty sturdy and made well. It makes me want to explore a smaller one. I like it a lot.I added a few images that are straight from camera, no editing. Just grabbed a screen shot of them to see the light with and without a grid.
