Domina: Season 1 [DVD] [2022]

Another DVD where I really had to think hard about my star rating. To be utterly honest, I didn't like/enjoy anything much about this series. Why? Here goes...Nobody has mentioned the constant use of the "F..." word. Hopelessly out of place coming from the mouths of Roman governors/Senators/wives/girlfriend etc. (Yes They probably did swear in Roman times, I am just saying it sounded wrong - The "C..." word is also thrown every episode - I can accept swearing, but it has to be in the appropriate setting, and this wasn't it!). Then there is the script. I found it didn't do justice to the times or the plot (which is so good). Actors can only do their best with what they are given to say, and here poor acting dominates. I don't enjoy criticising performences but why was Kasia Smutniak (Me neither) given the lead role? The only actors who emerged for me with a modicum of respect were Liam Cunningham (of course) but he departs early, Mathew McNulty as Gaius, Ben Batt as Agrippa and Clair Forlani as Gaius's sister Octavia. Everyone else just didin't seem right. The photography was dark - The filming is nearly all done on studio sets lit (seemingly) by candlelight. Very little location work. The sets were bleak as were the costumes. I think I have said enough to annoy a lot of reviewers who obviously enjoy the show. Why 3 stars? Because there is a really good plot and story to tell, and it does try, and the transfer is good. Remember, my opinion is just that...Not fact. So look at all the favourable reviews and then decide, but if there is a series two I won't be getting it.

Brilliant take on the role of women in the power plays of ancient Roman politics. The Machievelian scheming keeps you on the edge of your seat. On the down side, large chunks of history barely get a mention or are dropped in a conversation as if they were just day-to-day events (like the fate of Marc Antony and the naval battle with Egypt) but it is a highly enjoyable for all of that.

Best thing since I Claudius regarding this period in time in Rome.

Would be great use they done more episodes as you have to wait so long till the next series

I bought this for my mum and she really enjoyed it. A good purchase.
