Nice, Durable, Great Value
I saw this backpack on clearance at REI, but found it here on Amazon for $10 less, so I decided to pick it up and give it a try. I'm comparing this to an REI Trailmade 60, which is the only other backpack that I currently own, but not the only other backpack that I've used.First off, this pack is definitely heavier than the REI bag, weighing in at around 4lbs. This does have an internal frame, but it's more of a steel wire frame around the perimeter, versus two aluminum rods down the back like I've seen in other bags. That being said, it doesn't feel that heavy when loaded with 20lbs of gear and it carries the weight well. The build quality is excellent. The materials all feel thick and durable. The only part of the bag that has me a little concerned is the buckle used for the hip belt - it just seems thinner than all of the other buckles. I also wish the mesh side pockets had more tension as they sort of feel like they'll stretch and lose their tension over time, causing things to fall out. Overall, I could see this pack lasting a very long time. The lid/brain is different than most other packs that I've tried out. With most packs, you unbuckle the lid, then open it, and then there's a large cinch pouch inside. This pack just has a giant zipper lid that you unzip to directly access the stuff inside. It's much simpler and I honestly really like it. I find it easier to load. There's also a side access zip pocket allowing you to access the main compartment from the side. There is no dedicated sleeping bag pouch, but I could go either way on that one. Plenty of other attachment points on the bag, and I love the large mesh.Adjusting the straps was confusing at first and I couldn't find any information on how to do it. The straps are basically attached to the bag via velcro, so you have to jam your hand in between the straps and the bag to separate the velcro, then adjust the strap and press the velcro back down to hold it in place. The velcro section is massive so it takes some effort to get it apart to adjust it. It can be kind of a pain, but once it's adjusted it ain't going anywhere. Adjusting the hip belt, sternum strap, shoulder straps, and load lifters are standard and easy to do.The pack feels pretty comfortable over when adjusted properly. Plenty of padding, especially on the hip belt. On the back of the hip belt, where the bag makes contact with your lower back just above your butt, there is some very thick padding, but I find it to be a little too thick to the point where it's almost pressing itself into the lowest part of my back. Maybe I can fix that with some more torso adjustments, but so far I haven't been able to get rid of it. It's an annoying pressure point. For reference, I'm 5'10" and 150lbs.In summary, this is a great value bag that feels durable and holds a ton. Not sure yet if I'll keep it, but if you're in the market for a cheaper 60L, this is worth trying out.
