Does this fair tip back easily if child leans back and it is not up against the wall or something stationary?

No, at least not with my grandson. The chair is kept close to the wall though in case he stands up. This chair is also a favorite of their mid size dog. And the chair has never tipped over when the dog gets up on it and finds his comfy spot. It's a nice solid chair with a removable/ washable cover.

Up to what age would a child fit comfortably in this chair?

I would say 3 or 4, of course depending on the child size, some children are bigger and some smaller, I wouldn’t go past 4 for sure

How supportive is the back? Is it possibly to fall back with kid sitting and leaning against it, assuming they’re sitting normally or curled up?

No it will not tip back if the child is just leaning in the chair.
