Gross Out

You need this in your life!
Where do I start? This book will make you retch and then laugh. Is it gross? Duh. But like, in the best way possible! It’s funny and it’s also a really great story! It kept me engaged and you have people you’re rooting for and people you hate. It’s freaking amazing! And if you’ve read WOOM (if you haven’t shame on you, go read it NOW!) our friends Shyla and Angel make an appearance and it’s pretty amazing. Duncan Ralston is an instant buy author. I don’t even care to read the synopsis of any future book, I’m buying it. This is a ride and very fun one! Have fun friends. *gobble gobble* IYKYK ;)

"Gross Out" by Duncan Ralston"We may be horror writers, but we're horror fans first. We're horror writers second."It's that time of year again for the Spaltterfest convention. Authors and fans from all over gather together for the opportunity to mingle, buy/sell books, and most importantly participate in the Gross Out contest. But not all the guests this year have good intentions. Some have their own unsavory agendas that include the act of revenge."What they didn't seem to grasp was that standing on the shoulders of giants offered little benefit if you've clipped them off at the knees."Welcome to another fabulous story in the Woom Universe by the amazing Duncan Ralston. For those of you who are familiar with Ralston's "Woom", you'll love every second of this story. This novel isn't nearly as gross as "Woom" (despite its title) but it does give you incredibly interesting perspectives and even some answers into what happened to our favorite characters at the end of "Woom". It's possible while reading this you'll even take note of certain characters and their striking similarities to those individuals in the indie horror community. I know I most certainly did. This story touches on some really important aspects of horror culture. Most importantly the Gross Out contest itself. Character Clay represented every aspect of gatekeeping that there is and if you didn't immediately think of a particular dead inside author, than I'm not sure you read the same book that I did 💀🪳. Let's not forget the Slobby Poo Poo man, who changed the course of recommending and reviewing poop splattered novels forever 💩🚽or the fabulous Sonic the Hedgehog imagery Ralston included inside. IYKYK 🍆 🦔.Come stay a while at the Lonely Motel and find a seat at the Gross Out. You won't be disappointed.

Better than WOOM
Set in the WOOM universe, but I liked this one quite a bit more. There's more characters, more locations, more violence and mayhem. It's ultimately quite interesting and suspenseful, and Ralston teases us with what will happen at the end. The tease drives the reader forward, eager to know what he has up his sleeve. This one is imaginative and fun, pokes fun at the whole indie horror "community" and has a lot of meat on its bones. This was a fun ride. I'd recommend.

Master Storyteller
Do you remember the scene in the movie "Stand By Me" of the pie eating contest with "Lardass Hogan" who downs a bottle of castor oil before eating so he can projectile vomit on all the other contestants? Take that scene and amplify it by 500 or so, and you have the masterpiece that is GROSS OUT.𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫'𝐬 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! There are a dizzying number of characters to keep up with, but everything fell into place quickly. Authors, critics, fans, and hopefuls gather to share stories and to participate in the annual Gross Out. Some attendees have arrived with ulterior motives, and others have arrived full of bitterness and planning revenge. This is only my second book by this author, and he's got a fan for life. He is a gifted storyteller, and even if extreme horror isn't your thing (I never thought it would be mine!) he can tell a damn good story. He gets right to the heart of what makes his characters tick, and I appreciate that so much in an author. While not a sequel to WOOM, it exists in the same universe, and both Shyla and Angel are featured, and it was like revisiting old friends. I look forward to reading about them in future books!

Disappointed
I was super hyped up to read some gory goo and was let down. It felt more like a weird romance novel than a splatterfest convention. One part of the book was great! Wish I could have seen my face. LOLRalston did bring the story together with all the "players" at end. It felt rushed without a lot of thought behind it. This doesn't mean I'll stop reading his books though!

Fun Read
I enjoyed Gross Out tremendously. As someone who was around for the very first "Gross Out" readings this brought back some fun memories. Loved the references to patrons of the con ( hmmm, I think I've known a few from the online community) You don't need to read Doom first to enjoy this book, but if you want to know more about Shyla and Angel, I recommend it. Highly recommend Gross Out.

Visuals imprinted on my brain forever
One of my favorite things about Ralston is his ability to write in different styles. I haven't loved all the books I have read but I have loved most of them and respected those I didn't love. Woom was one of my favorites. (Thank you for the author's note that lead me to Woomies.) I listened to Woom at work and had to stop and finish at home. There are visuals that I will never be able to forget. Gross Out also has created visuals that I'll remember for quite some time. I also enjoyed seeing Shyla and Angel again. There were a lot of fun characters. Misti with an I and Aimee with Two Es made me laugh. I loved Jackson Rawlins too. Those characters were created with such clarity that they made me laugh constantly.I love short stories but I didn't really like all the little stories in Gross Out. I do understand that in the context of the book, they did make sense. Overall, I found the book to be fun and disgusting. Some days you just need a bit of slobby poo poo in your life.

This book is like a dysfunctional family geting together you have your black sheeps maybe a alcoholic in the mix who likes whiskey a bit to much. But this story is about bringing them all together and eat stuffing chasing turkeys and loving and forgiving one another show them you truly care about them regardless of the stupid things they did its thanksgiving and we should all be thankfull for this wonderfull ride and turkey stuffing we are eating because at the end of the day.... We could all be somewhere worst than we can imagine BEAUTIFUL BOOK AMAZING LOVE STORY <3

Very enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not what I was expecting after reading Woom. Definitely a good read for splatterpunk fans in general

you get what it says in the title
well it's hilarious to read the negative reviews, saying Duncan lacks competence as a writer and the like. he does not. the title clearly states what you gonna get in the book, there is a fair deal of warnings. so if reading the book, be fair and judge it the right way. for me it was a feast to read. the logic successor to WOOM, which you probably should read before Gross Out, tho it's not mandatory. We get a tale of some awesome characters attending a Horror-Con, all of them with some agenda to be there, some fueled by thirst for revenge, some fame and some just for the fun of it. over the convention weekend the most strange and suprisingly gross things happen :pthe book had me laugh so hard at certain points, I mean, to come up with a character like the Hashtag King you gotta be creative and witty.go read it folks, it's a great story.

Puke fest
If you are looking for a historical story about hunting a white whale, buy Moby Dick. If you want to be equal parts horrified, terrified, amused, repulsed, intrigued and grossed out, buy this one.5 out of 5 puke buckets.

From one extreme to another
I'm sorry to say there was nothing I enjoyed about this book and if it had been the first I'd read from this author, I wouldn't have read another.I understand the author wanted to not follow Woom by only having 2 characters but I just felt this one had too many characters. None of them were developed enough in any way that made it easy to follow who was who. This was a difficult read for me as I had to keep flicking back to remember what had happened with each character earlier. The only reason for 2 stars is that I gave it 1 for the time taken to write it and another as I was thankful it wasn't full of spelling and grammar mistakes.
