How do you get it off? help!

Turn it counter clockwise. I found that it takes some force to do it. Slots keep it in place. It does not screw on or off as you found out.

Will this allow me to attach a telescope lens to my camera?

I used the adapter ring to attach close up filters and you should be able to attach any lens that has a matching thread.
