A New York Times bestseller! From the award-winning writer of American Gods and Coraline, The Sandman is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed graphic novels of all time. Neil Gaiman's award-winning masterpiece set the standard for mature, lyrical fantasy in the modern comics era. Illustrated by an exemplary selection of the medium's most gifted artists, the series is a rich blend of modern and ancient mythology in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven. An unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death, this first of four volumes drawn by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones III, and Kelley Jones, with spectacular guest art by Chris Bachalo, Colleen Doran, Charles Vess, and Michael Zulli introduces readers to a dark and enchanting world of dreams and nightmares: the home of Morpheus, the King of Dreams, and his kin, the Endless. Collects the story arcs 'Preludes and Nocturnes,' 'The Doll's House,' and 'Dream Country,' from The Sandman #1-20 including the first comic book to ever win a World Fantasy Award, issue #19s 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.'

Wonderful new edition. Big bang for your buck
I ordered 3 copies of this for a "favorites party" my wife was throwing; the idea is you get together with friends and bring 3 copies of one of your favorite things, and then everyone does like a dirty santa style exchange and walks away from the party with 3 different things that are their friends' favorite things.I didn't really read the product description here, just saw Sandman vol 1 and that the price fit under the party limit, and I ordered them. I fully expected copies of the old vol 1 TPB that only has the first story arch in it- like 6 issues. Imagine my surprised when this monster arrives with the first 3 story arcs, 20 issues- this is less than $1 per comic! Absolutely bonkers! Now, I'm not going to buy the rest of this edition, because I have the Absolute Editions on my shelf, but I think there's a very good chance my 3 friends will want to continue this series and will be picking up the rest. All that talk about this particular edition out of the way, as you can guess, I believe Sandman is one of the greatest comics ever produced. It's a beautiful story, rich in imagination and poetry and art. If you've never read it, buy this version (again, less than $1 per comic, CRAZY) and dive right in.

A truly remarkable graphic novel series!
I have heard so much about Neil Gaiman's "The Sandman" graphic novels that I finally decided to pick up Book 1. I must say it lived up to my lofty expectations. Imaginative, original stories (it is incredibly hard for one to come across stories that are truly novel these days ... but "The Sandman" is indeed an impressive and creative work of art!) and fantastic artwork ... what's there not to like?I quickly placed orders for Books 2–4 (so as to have the entire original series which ran from 1988 to 1996, spanning issues #1–75) together with "The Sandman: Overture" (which revolves around events prior to the original series). In my opinion, the cover art for Book 1 is the most attractive among the four volumes. As others have observed, issue #8 is a pivotal point for the series. The series takes on a surer footing and different character from this point forth. At this point, I do not see myself collecting the other issues that are spin-offs from the original 1988–1996 series. Past experiences tell me that the original creative effort is, by far, the best. Past experiences also reveal that subsequent efforts are usually attempts to milk the readers. But we will see ... never say never!Lastly, this four-volume, 2022-edition is the best choice price-wise compared to the 30th anniversary edition which spans 10 volumes (this makes it more expensive to purchase).
