Chain of Thorns (3) (The Last Hours)

Cassandra Clare just has me in her...
Cassandra Clare just has me in her hooks and will not let go. The world of the Shadowhunters is always so entertaining and rife with so many characters. What Clare continues to do so well is her characters. While Clare might not have the greatest plots, its the characters that really make you fall in love with her. Chain of Thorns was no exception to that. I loved this book. Chain of Thorns wrapped the story of James, Lucie, Cordelia, and the rest so beautifully. Now this book did seem to be a tad bit too long, but how Clare handled every characters arc and the overall story was so well executed. The Last Hours series has been one of the best in Shadowhunters history. Now with all that said, I am ready for Clare to venture away from this universe and expand her horizons, so I am super excited to be getting Sword Catcher later this year. Do I want her to finish this series, absolutely, will I wait patiently for it, absolutely, and when it is all said and done will I miss it, absolutely, but I do think it is time to say good-bye. The Wicked Powers is next and last for the Shadowhunters supposedly and it is one series I have been dying for since Clare first announced it.

Clare is BACK!!!
Cassandra Clare is back in force with The Last Hours. After a disappointing Dark Artifices, she more than made up for it with this series. I loved everything about it: the characters (Cordelia, James, OMG Matthew, Alastair and Thomas, Lucie and Jesse, Anna and Ari, and even Grace) both good and evil and those in between were well developed and awesome, the sarcastic bite and funny banter we got used to in Mortal Instruments is back, and the writing is fabulous as usual. One of the things that didn't work for me in The Dark Artifices series was the chaos of characters. There were so many and they were so obviously there to check an item in the diversity list that it just didn't work for me. It just didn't flow naturally. Things have changed with this series. Still a lot of characters and POVs as per Clare's usual but very well managed and the diversity card is seamlessly and masterfully incorporated in the story, giving it a very natural flow.Congrats Ms, Clare, you've done it again. Love it and highly recommend it for fantasy and romantasy lovers YA and adult.P.S. - that bonus scene at the end was awesome.

Heartfelt conclusion to this trilogy
Cassie Clare is a magician with one liners that stand out and make you pay attention. Honestly there’s a dozen more quotes I could have placed in this reel that would have been equally as heart felt or funny. She brings us characters in a magical world full of nephilim, demons, Princes of Hell, and a Christmas tree made of weapons. It’s fantastical and a world that’s woven so well over the entire series. Yet, her characters are so very real and deal with real world situations in a way that isn’t the least bit fantastical, most poignant in this installment: Alcoholism and the recovery to get back to a healthy place of self and friends. LGBTQ heartache & bravery and the repercussions of coming out to your family and friends.I do not think this is the strongest of her books plot wise, but I think her strength shines in her characters relational developments. I’ve never rooted for so many MC’s to ALL get their happy endings as I have in this book, even the *villainous* ones. And you can see the tremendous growth and changes Cassandra Clare has taken over the years of writing ShadowHuntersTold in 3rd person POV from MANY characters, there’s a core pair that is followed, but so many journeys that make up the whole of this book.Convincing you to read Chain of Thorns requires convincing you to read all of Shadow Hunters, for it’s just a tiny part of the whole. If you like YA magic, sorcery, demons and fighting for the greater good both in the metaphysical and the real world actions, the ShadowHunters series is for you. It’s a large undertaking, but I’ve found it extremely worth it and knowing these characters has added value to my life.

An Excellent Conclusion to The Last Hours Trilogy!
We waited so long for this epic finale and it was so worth the wait! My only complaint would be that it was a little long but even that didn’t bother me much because I could read about these characters all the time and not get bored.I don’t want to say too much because of spoilers but you can expect all the emotions that Shadowhunter books always bring. And even though some things didn’t happen the way I wanted them to, I’m content with the ending.I was a little disappointed that the ebook version did not have the bonus story at the end but yet the audiobook version did. The audiobook is, as always, superbly narrated by Finty Williams for the listeners out there. All in all, The Dark Artifices, still remains my favorite Shadowhunter series but The Last Hours is a close second!

Exquisite ending as London is saved
This series of 3 books has been so dramatic and exciting. The love stories were fraught with misunderstandings and hurdles before the lovers came together. Shadowhunters are people with human frailties and after all, the young people in these stories grew up beautifully .

Enjoyable, but predictable
Overall, this was an enjoyable conclusion to the trilogy and provided a good, if somewhat predictable, story. Infernal Devices is still my favorite trilogy, and being back in that world allowed me to enjoy this trilogy more (especially after the letdown of Dark Artifices). I feel as if there was an excess of angst and miscommunication, leading to a lack of depth in the shadow hunter world. We don’t really get to see the awesomeness of the parabatai, as it is glossed over and just talked about. The love triangle was ridiculous, especially as there was already a forced love triangle to begin with due to the bracelet. As with the last trilogy, this one was too long and had me skimming at points. I am hopeful the last trilogy in the shadow hunter world will be better.

Excellent quality!
The media could not be loaded. The book cover is vibrant and good quality, the words are clear on the pages! It is a great book. One of my favourite series! As you can see I am not quite done this one but I will be in no time. 10/10 would recommend this series to anyone who likes fantasy and supernatural genres!

mixed feelings
So of course this book is more fun to read and makes more sense when you’ve read the other shadowhunter books. You’ll understand all the cameo’s and references. You should especially read the infernal devives since the main characters in that trilogy are the parents of the main characters in this trilogy. I wish it wasn’t so long ago since I’ve read chain of gold and chain of iron. I definitely needed to look things up in the wiki from time to time. I enjoyed reading this book, getting to know the cast even better is mostly what makes it enjoyable. It doesn’t feel like a finale though. The ending is very open with a lot of loose ends. You’re left with a lot of questions instead of answers. And without a definitive and reliable family tree for any of the families. This feels like a setup for a next book instead of wrapping everything up and having the epilogue feeling like everyone’s happy ending like in a fairytale. You can’t help rooting for all of the couples: James and Cordelia, Ari and Anna, Thomas and Alastair. So yes, even after sort of another unsatisfying cliffhanger of an ending you’ll still be wanting more shadowhunter books. Just like a lot of people I’ll be patiently waiting for the wicked powers. Or a sequel to this could also work and fill in the gaps.
