After harvesting, natural sea sponges are often covered in black slime and contain sea debris (such as kelp, seaweed, and bits of coral or seashell). The divers clean them with water and the heat of the sun kills off the black slime that the sponges are coated with. Processing includes the use of an acid solution in order to remove sand, coral and shell particles from the sponge canals. Every sponge company has to use this process to ensure the sponge is clean if not intended for home decoration purposes. After cleaning, sponges often undergo a natural lightening process using bleaching agents (potassium permanganate) which gives them their well-known yellow color and makes them softer.
