Datacolor SpyderCube - 3D Advanced Calibration Tool and Profiling Solution for Accurate Color Matching and Consistency

As the director of an art gallery in Santa Fe's world-famous Canyon Road art district, the ability to quickly and accurately adjust the colors in artwork photography is crucial to our success. When used in conjunction with Adobe Lightroom, the Datacolor SpyderCube has served to streamline the process and dramatically improve the end result. Datacolor's website offers some excellent video tutorials on the effective use of this tool. The price is a bit high given the simplicity of the design, but the results have been worth it!

I like it better than the grey card. The black trap is especially clever in my opinion.

This is a fun gadget that works well enough for documentaries to post-process mixed lighting. Using the dropper to auto-balance an image in Lightroom didn't work as well as I had hoped, and I still had to do a significant amount of adjusting afterward. I'd give it three stars because it's such a neat idea, even though it didn't work for me. I liked using it more than my gray-card, although I'm bummed that this doesn't replace my gray card if I want to manually set my white balance in-camera. It's small enough that I don't mind carrying it around anyway. HOWEVER, I discovered during my last session that it was an amazing prop to have on-hand for sessions with autistic kids. The solid, geometric shapes and simple-yet-stimulating details delighted the kid I worked with recently. The fact that it swings is even better, and it withstands a bit of mouthing and even drops and banging, so I had no qualms about handing it over for play. I brought this out as my friend was getting tired during our 2-hour session. It completely re-energized him and he was ecstatic. He played with it, held it close, and enjoyed it for the rest of the session. As an autistic person myself, I can vouch for how soothing the simple lines of this are, especially compared to the frenetic environment of a photo-shoot. If you work with kids on the spectrum, this is probably the best toy to have on hand, along with a small kit of clean stim-toys.

I should have bought into the DataColor system long ago. Improved your work and makes professional printing a breeze - if you get the whole system and calibrate. Pays for itself instantly. This is mainly for jpeg shooters. If you attach it to the to of the color sweetie filer thing, you get the added benefit of a light trap and specular level that isn't on the color checker. Super useful on set for quick fixes, too. You will want the color checker for calibrating your lens and camera combos. But this is still super portable and amazingly helpful.

I get much better white balance readings with my gray card. Tge area on this are two small to get a reliable measurement .

1) It attaches to a light stand. I don't have to ask the person to hold anything during portraits. Looks professional. 2) It is non-reflective - Shiny grey cards are almost useless to me when using flash. 3) Tri-tone: I tend to color adjust in lightroom using the Spyder using the grey. Once in a great while I will need to use the white instead of the grey. 4) Shadow hole There is a hole on the black part that allows you to set the darkest point in the picture. Very useful when are trying to get a "true" black in the histogram. Useful for color-correcting black and white images. 5) Small and fits easily in a camera bag. No fold/wrinkle marks.

This is a great tool for setting white balance. It's a little pricy, but after getting gray cards that are not the same color gray, I decided to get a product from a manufacturer that I trust.

I'm upset though, that the packaging came really, and I mean really banged up and looked like it had been opened. There was a slice through the box that looked like it was from a box cutter/blade, and also the Amazon envelope was spliced open!!! Not happy about that, and upon further review, I've noticed the block actually CAME damaged. The black paint is scuffed. I would recommend looking at other alternatives. Although is comes at a hefty price for a plastic white balance cube, you aren't guaranteed a product that will come without scuffs/damaged packaging. Wouldn't recommend - because of the price and the paint job.

Husband used it to fix color on monitors for photo editing. Worked well.

Fué una excelente idea crear este cubo para hacer el balance de blancos. Blanco, negro, negro absoluto y gris al 18%, y sea idea de la esferita me permite ver la dirección de la luz y el entorno.

If you want to get white balance quickly and easily this is the piece of kit you require. In Lightroom etc you can set black and white clipping easily too.
