He's wonderful. A great gift idea
Bought it for a 'white elephant' Christmas party gift, and my friend who 'won' it loved it. I bought another one for myself because it was so well-made and unique. Sadly, my friend's fell to an untimely death when he left it 'running' overnight and it slowly inched over to the edge of the desk and took a nose-dive. My friend and his bird were shattered. (Each time the bird comes down for a drink, his neck 'clinks' on the glass, and each clink vibration apparently made the little guy scootch a bit farther...if you plan to run yours unattended, put him/her on a mousepad or other surface where he/she doesn't wander.)

If you are going to give someone the bird, this is the one to give!
My girlfriend loved it. After making a comment about the toy drinking bird while watching the movie, "When Harry Met Sally" I decided to look for one for her. This is much nicer than the plastic toy birds and fits in well with other collectible fine glassware.

Does Not Work! Bad Design of a Classic Toy
Do not purchase this toy. It does not work. I have owned 3 similar drinking birds and understand what makes them work. This one is out of balance and poorly engineered. First, the bird is tail heavy - the large fluid bulb is too heavy. Therefore, the bird does not rock long enough like a pendulum to cool water on the beak. On a drinking bird that works, a cool beak is what causes the fluid to rise up the neck and eventually add weight to the head causing it to dip into the water. Once this happens the fluid quickly recedes back to the large bulb to begin the process again. Secondly, the coating on the beak does not "wet" or "wick" water well, so even if the rocking motion was better the bird would not function very long as the beak would dry out. On this bird it takes several minutes for fluid to rise up the neck partially; it then slows and the rocking motion stops completely. If you do purchase a better drinking bird, expect it to last about a year. After that the beak coating deteriorates and the vacuum inside the glass is lost.

Charming, Fragile & Not nearly as much fun as the cheesy ones with the hats.
It's a charming piece of glasswork that now dips once a day as it sits in front of my sunny window. Dipping in water, the head doesn't drop far enough to give one much flexibility about water and glass height, so it doesn't drink for long. I think the bird is a little low in liquid. It also doesn't adjust its neck length like the cheesy ones with hats, which are much more fun. This one also lost a point when its arm broke off by falling from its legs onto the table, but I Goop'ed the arm back on successfully.

This birdie is thirsty
This busy Glass Dipping Bird is a great improvement over the 16 year old model I've been using. I don't have to nudge it every hour like the older one. Glad I can see it drinking non-stop 24 hours a day. Very well designed.
