This book adds magnitudes to the library of human experience.
I'm a fan of Huda's webcomic and I got this graphic novel for the relatable laughs. I wasn't disappointed in the least, but I was surprised by how much more this book has to offer beyond Huda's unique brand of hilarity. I read it all in one sitting and I burst into tears as I saw a different version of my own story reflected back at me. I have so much respect for Huda Fahmy. I already loved her before, but masha'Allah, she was mind-bogglingly vulnerable on these pages, bravely showing us the most intimate internal struggles of her adolescence to establish a level of authenticity and depth of insight that's truly rare to see, all while exercising some of the most skillful storytelling and delightful cartooning I've ever experienced. This book adds magnitudes to the library of human experience.Alhamdulillah the Muslim American experience has been so powerfully captured in this awesome format. Huda was careful to say that this story doesn't speak for all Muslims, but there are very few Muslim stories told at all in the US (and many that are contribute to self-loathing Western rescuer narratives). From one Muslim woman who loves cartooning and grew up in America in a difficult era to another, may Allah reward you for this effort and bless you in all of your endeavors, Huda. I don't have kids, but in case I ever do insha'Allah, I'll be saving this gem for my children to read as soon as they're old enough, as a guide to navigate growing up here, to loving Islam and being true to ourselves and good to each other while figuring out our place in an environment that's not sure what to make of us.
