Fine Art Inkjet Printing: The Craft and Art of the Fine Digital Print

A Worthwhile Read
I found this well worth the money, although be advised that the discussion of the actual printing process doesn’t start until page 105 of this 220 page book. For a good print, it is understandably essential to start with a good photo, so any author of a book about printing has a dilemma – how far back in the capture and editing process do you go? You could go all the way back to f stops and shutter speeds, since camera craftsmanship is essential to get a photo that will result in a good print. Thankfully, the author didn’t go that far back in the process. Instead, the first 105 pages cover editing techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop as well as optimizing your workflow, as well as some great tips about sharpening. One of the key elements of knowledge I took away from the book was the effect of optimizing your PPI for Epson versus Canon printers, and why it makes sense to adjust it yourself as opposed to letting the printer do it. There is also some great discussion on black and white printing.Things I would have liked to have seen would include a more expanded discussion on the subject of clogged print heads which are like the “heartbreak of psoriasis” for those of us who print our own photos. And in the fairly lengthy discussion about using various techniques to emphasize or de-emphasize elements of an image, no mention is made of Lightroom/Camera Raw’s “de-haze” filter which is a wonderful and subtle (if used sparingly) way to draw attention to the key portions of an image. In a nutshell, it’s a worthwhile read. I skimmed the first 105 pages and still picked up some interesting stuff, and then when I got into the printing part of the book it was like shifting into high gear.

Best book on digital photo printing that I have read. Covers both the technical aspects as well as the artistic considerations of printing photos.

Great start to the topic
Would love a bit more info and more detail in some of the areas. More detail would be great in the choosing print paper section.

I want my money back...
While laid out ok and written in easy to understand language this book is very basic. It should be called an introduction to printing for beginners. All the editing and printing tips/advice are beginner level at best, not a lot deeper information beyond what’s explained in the software or printer instructions. So if you’re a real beginner to photography or printing then I’d give it 4 stars.

Irritating
By the time you get to the second chapter the repeated phrase of "digital darkroom" starts to get irritating. What is wrong with "post processing"? Also, the author keeps using the word "RAW" capitalised. It is not an acronym so doesn't need to be capitalised, Raw or raw.
