Read Aloud with Grandkiddos
My granddaughter requested this book for her birthday, which I sent to her and also to two other granddaughters, all elementary school readers. From the first chapter, all of us were hooked. Each chapter ends with sort of a cliff-hanger, compelling us to keep on reading. Watching the characters develop, learning about orphan trains and the things Vivian had to do to survive was eye-opening for them, as they learned this novel is based in history. All four of us enjoyed this book, especially our time together reading.

Nice flow
I enjoyed Orphan Train Girl. It flowed nicely. The book tells the story of a young Irish girl who became a orphan after a terrible fire kills her family in the early 1900s. She rides the Orphan Train and is placed with a family and forced to work for them. Fast forward to present day, she tells her story to a young girl in foster care. The book switches back and forth between time periods, but it is done very well. There is never a confusion about what time period one is currently reading about. It just flowed perfectly. It was an easy read, but very satisfying.

Orphaned, Alone & Frightened
This was a big part of our history. It isn’t talked about like the great battles that were fought were. Imagine what these poor children had to go through. Uprooted from their homes, everyone & everything that they held dear, tragically & traumatically taken from them. To be grieving and heartbroken headed for who knows where, without anyone to love, hug & reassure them. To land in homes where they were treated like slaves, thieves & servants. To appreciate what you have, the people that love & care about you, the good life you have, read this book!

Not the Edition I Thought I Was Buying
Bummed this is the "Young Readers Edition" and not the regular version. It should state that in the item title.

My grandmother could have been an orphan train rider
Loved this book and felt a connection with Nieve as my grandmother was a first generation American and considered an orphan because she had no father.Mary was raised by the N.Y. Founding Home but I believe that her mother's involvement kept her from being put on an orphan train.A well written tale of two journeys. I absolutely enjoyed every minute that I spent reading this book.

Engaging realistic characters from 2 different eras
I read this story in 6 hrs while recovering from surgery. The story was from 2 points of view. A young modern /goth Native American, and an elderly Irish woman. So many similarities and such wonderful details. I was emmersed in the story from start to finish. (Im 48 so this can appeal to any age)

This book is a walk throuhgh history
I lived this book , It sheds light on a story that needed to be told . At a time in our country when children were voiceless. I am so glad all the hardships they went through were no longer a secret . Thank you for telling their stories. I could not put this book down.

The treatment of orphans
The book is very interesting as it presents two different women in two different periods of living, yet both have much in common. Vivian and Molly are strong characters who have experienced many difficulties in the earliest years of their lives and their conversations bring them together as each learns to understand the other.
