First Time Trying
I have been wanting to try this fruit for the longest time. But I have always been afraid of the pungent smell everyone talks about. So, finally I ordered this freeze dried fruit for the experience and to see how it smells and tastes. The packets arrived quickly and I went outside with my husband to try it. I opened the packet and did not experience any foul or pungent smell. To me, it smelled like onion dip. I tasted it and it tasted very sweet with a hint of onion dip. Also, it kind of sticks to your teeth. On the other hand, my husband smelled it and said it smelled pungent and chemically. He did not want to try it; it was not appetizing to him. Mind you, I am the one in the family with a sensitive sense of smell; yet, I did not find this fruit yucky or pungent. Interesting experience!

Tastes pretty good (depending on your palate), but know what to expect
Though I have yet to try the fresh fruit, I really enjoy the taste of freeze-dried durian. Some people will like this more than others. I am someone who LOVES sweet and savory (things like honey on pizza, caramelized onions, salt on cookies). The best way I can describe the flavor is like a combination of creamy marshmallow, caramelized/roasted garlic and sparkling wine. It is a complex flavor, so not everyone will like it. My partner thinks it is "fine", doesn't hate it, just does not love it. If I think about it too much there does seem to be an over-ripe or rotten fruit smell and taste that can be associated with this.As with all freeze dried fruit, this will stick to your teeth a little, so be prepared for the taste to linger. This is the second brand of freeze-dried durian I have bought on Amazon. I liked the taste of both brands, but the other one (Rozocha) seemed to be a better value. They were supposed to weigh about the same, but Rozocha was divided into 4 little packs instead of 2 and it just seemed like I got more durian.

Its an acquired taste
Being that my wife is from the Philippines and grew up on this stuff, she liked it. I was lass then thrilled. Would prefer the fresh version.

Durian--a reason to live.
I love durian. I am addicted to durian. However I live in a small city in south VA and it's not available here. The nearest shop that sells frozen whole fruits is Roanoke, and they're priced by the pound (often more than 10 lbs!!!) and thus prohibitively expensive. This is the best way to get my durian fix without using half my paycheck on gas and the fruit. Freeze dried is still great, it retains that complex flavor and the smell (which I find to be intoxicatingly beautiful and it makes my mouth water every time I smell it) and I highly recommend it as a snack, a cheaper alternative to fresh or frozen, or if you're like me, a stand in for your true drug of choice--the fresh fruit with that unbelievable custardy texture.

stored in washing powder
this dried durian is pretty good and I'm buying it often. this time i bought 2 packs and both smells like pack of washing powder. i think it is amazon storage issue, but anyway, it damaged content.

I Love It; Wife Hates It
I’ve wanted to try durian for years. But it’s hard to get in the States. So I figured this was a good option.I feel like my first experience with durian was typical:I love it. I think it tastes like candy. The smell doesn’t bother me at all. I plan to eat much more durian in the future. My wife thinks it’s awful. She claims it makes our whole place smell terrible. She makes me eat it outside. But it’s really good. So worth it.

Excellent flavor
I've never had fresh durian but my brother who has said the flavor was there just less. I thought it was quite good even though I've heard horrible things about durian, it didn't really have a bad smell either and the flavor was really good and complex.

Not bad.
Not bad. I was expecting it to smell like death but I can't smell much of anything. The taste is similar to any other freeze dried fruit... a bit tangy and sour, but with a onion note. I'd say it reminds me of a spoiled cheap, off brand sour cream and onion chip that you'd get from a discount store... but you keep eating because the flavor is unique and kind of enjoyable.I want to try some fresh durian now.
