Ophie’s Ghosts

Wonderful and insightful
My daughter loved this book! She is 10 and has a love of history and a real appreciation for mystery. The presentation of the events that led to Ophie and her mother ending up with Caruthers was a suspenseful buildup. This book identified a relatable complexity of families, and the trials of residing with family members from different upbringings. It also highlighted subtle prejudices that exist today, as well as blatant ones...that also still exist, in a way that brought up very healthy discussions in our family after the completion of the book. This was a must read and we are really hoping for a continuation or sequel so that we may learn how Ophie and her mother progress, rebuilding their life on their own.

Justina Ireland's best book yet!
I say this as someone who loved Dread Nation: Ophie's Ghosts is even better! Told with a strong sense of location, this engaging book incorporates places as characters almost as much as people! Despite the incorporation of themes that will be familiar to those who have read about or researched the Jim Crow Era and Seers who could communicate with the dead, the story of our young protagonist still feels fresh and surprising, as Ophelia learns to see the world around her and her own family history differently than before. There are many decisions ahead of her as she and her mother navigate a new city and difficult situations. Will she choose the easy route? Or the more difficult path that incorporates her ability to do good in ways that perhaps no one else can?The writing is spot on for the middle school level, and the story is amazing. I recommend this book to all readers 11 and above, and advanced readers of 9 and 10. Though there are some descriptions of ghosts who experienced violence, none of the book is gory, and the overall themes are about what people need in order to move on, in life and in death. The lessons inherent in this story are positive and important things that every person could do well to contemplate.

Ghost story
It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good ghost story. I enjoyed this middle grade on audiobook. Readers will enjoy hearing Ophie’s story as she learns how to interact with the ghosts all around her.

Excellent story about justice delayed but no longer denied
Where to begin? Ms. Ireland’s ghost story set amid of historical facts about Black reality — and unreality — is the perfect read for lovers of intriguing mysteries and the Black experience in the North. Since it is Written for middle graders I hope a discussion guide is developed for children and parents who read the book to discuss the issues of love, life and loss so deftly handled in the story.
