Charming illustrations with child-appeal
My grand-daughter loved this book, so much so that when it was due back at the library I bought it for her. The drawings have a pleasing innocence that appeals to children, for example, the picture of the twinkling star, the fat round sheep with smiling faces, Incy Wincy him (her?) self with eight different welly-boots. I have seen other nursery rhyme books with illustrations perhaps more appealing to adult taste, more quirky – even slightly creepy. In this book the charm of the illustrations softens the creepiness and violence of some of the traditional words and ideas: the broken Humpty Dumpty, the blind mice with severed tails, Jack’s broken crown etc. As in my own childhood the sound of the words and the rhythm is what my grand-daughter seems to love. There is a good range included. I am glad “Old MacDonald” is there as children love it, but also some older rhymes that I loved as a child such as “Cock-a-doodle-doo, my dame has lost her shoe”. Thankfully, there’s no attempt to modernize word order, or to find a new “take” or to be off-beat. Old favourites are fresh to young ones: particularly beloved of my little one are “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat where have you been?”.
