Q: How often does the filter need to be changed?

I had the prior machine till it started leaking. This one is great too in terms of producing DELICIOUS water. Love it. However, you have to be careful changing the filter. If you pause between the first and second button-pushing steps to do the flush after installing the new filter, you will get a continuous blinking red/blue light. After pushing the button three times quickly with a red light, you IMMEDIATELY need to hold it down to start the flush process. If you do not do it immediately (IE, you pause to look at the instructions), it will do the red/blue blink indefinitely and give you get nasty water and it won't return to blue. If my explanation isn't working, call Aquasana customer service and they will walk you thru it. The Aquasana web site has the number, and if I put it in the Q&A, it won't post.

Q: Why is this water filter so much more expensive than others?

Greed. I think this one is way over priced. It's not as easy to use as the last model. Plus, they refuse to use anything but plastic in the machine and pitcher parts. I would rather have something more friendly to me and the environment. I suggested YEARS ago, that they move to at least a glass pitcher. A metal machine wouldn't matter if it was heavier as it sits on the counter. I like that it filters the water better than anything else on the market. But they have yet to come up with a easy to use design. And yet to come up with something that is NOT plastic. If I could find another brand that filters the water as well as this one, I would buy it. If I could find the model before this one, I would purchase it instead. This particular model is extremely awkward to use. You would think that their engineers would use these things themselves and figure out how to design one that can be used and cleaned easily. You would think that they could have it manufactured in anything but plastic. That again shows greed.

Q: Does this work for the Arizona terrible water?

I am in Pennsylvania, so I cannot answer you. However, this is a lovely device with a quality filter. My guess is that it will work fine in AZ. You may be required to replace the filter with greater frequency. I am very pleased with mu unit after about a year. Good luck.
