Q: What are the dimensions of the backpack frame? I'm really wondering if underpacked, can I compress this bag down to fit as an international carryon?

I took mine as an international carry-on with American in October and had no issues.

Q: Has anyone actually tried taking this as a carry on for a flight? Was it small enough?

Yes, it fit in the overhead bins with ease except for one flight that was a completely full flight with overstuffed bins. It took some shoving but we finally got it into one. Of the four flights I took it on, only one had issue and it was a great carry-on bag that held everything I need and bought on a three day Disney trip.

Q: What are the true exterior dimensions? Amazon lists the size as both 22x14x9 and 22x15x12, and Osprey lists the size as 21.26x15.35x12.2.

I just measured mine and it is 22x14x9
