Great item! I was worried because my older KitchenAid ...
Great item! I was worried because my older KitchenAid food processor was much heavier and I was concerned that this one was too lightweight (and possibly cheap). However, it works very well and it is so much lighter to lift from its home on my wire shelves to place on the counter that I have become a big fan of its lightness! I also am super happy with the adjustable slicer -- great improvement! Another thing is the holes for putting fingers through to pull out the blades. Oh, and the quality of the material that the clear plastic is made of is wonderful -- washes up great and does not get cloudy...it just has a good "feel" to it, too.The ONLY sub-par item is that the buttons are oddly difficult to push....someone with arthritis could really have a problem. Maybe this is a flaw with my unit which I bought refurbished? I am not sure. I'm learning to live with the buttons, though, and otherwise I love this appliance!

Getting the refurbished to work
I, too, couldn't get this to work and thought I had a defunct refurbished product. I couldn't believe the high number of refurbished products that don't work (as reviewed online) so I called Kitchen Aid tech support. They were fantastic and I learned that while I had all of components snapped into place...I didn't have them in the correct position. The feed tube on the bowl cover needs to be in the 6 o'clock position directly above the control buttons. The bowl cover will attach and "snap into place" in several positions but the machine will not turn on unless the feed tube is in the 6 o'clock position. When in the correct position you will notice that the bowl cover has a protruding piece of plastic that clicks into the bowl handle. I think Kitchen Aid could do a better job of explaining assembly in their manual and I shared that with the rep. I was her seventh call that day to help with assembly. I'm so glad I called and have used it several times in the last week. I LOVE IT!!

Life expectancy less than a year?
Died 7 months after purchasing. Worked great for a while and then wham, dead, no power, nothing. Makes me wonder what 'certified refurbished' meant for this model? Stay away is my advice. Too bad, as it was nice when it worked.

HOW DID I GET ALONG WITHOUT THIS?
This item is the "Bomb"! We make our own dog food which usually includes boiled chicken breasts. The batches frequently include 8 or more breasts that had to be cut into small pieces. With the food processor, that chore is now whizzed past. The results are fine and mix very easily with the boiled rice and other ingredients. I also used it to slice some summer squash very rapidly for freezing. That was in the first 2 days after receiving it.I look forward to more uses. I only wish I'd bought one long ago.

Worth the price, so far
Was a little worried because KA major appliances are total junk (literally) and I used to sell them. But I have the mini KA food processer and it's a champ so, not wanting to spend a lot of money, I decided to take a chance and, so far, this one's been fine. It's obviously not the Cadillac of food processors but it's doing okay. I don't like that the food doesn't get closer to the blade, at the end. You end up wasting a lot of food but I'm just funny about that. A lot of people said theirs wouldn't start. In fact, the buttons are really funky and you have to press hard in exactly the right spot but they do work. Something about being smarter than the appliance. Also bowl has to be completely locked in place or no workee. I'm happy with it, just hope it holds up. Must be a pretty good motor, it weighs a ton.

Totally worth the savings!!!!
After reading the reviews, I have to admit, I was worried. I can't believe this was given poor reviews for some silly reasons. Yes, the top has to be installed correctly, there is a safety switch in the top of the handle on the bowl. The manual gives you clear instructions on how to "lock" it into the correct position. Another concern was the warranty (again, clearly marked on the manual), good for a year. If the mechanics fail, they fix it. Buttons are a little firm, nothing I would return it for, nor leave a poor rating. If you consider safety features, the buttons being a little bit tough to depress along with the locking mechanism on the bowl is much better versus the alternate.I am so happy with this! Saved money and got a awesome product. Would definitely recommend to family and friends. I will be shopping for more refurb products from kitchen aid. I was not given and type of compensation for my review.

Safety switch issue. Product would not turn on. However, being a handyman I repaired unit myself and it works great now. Love the machine as long as it turns on. I think I was shipped a previously returned defective unit however.

So far, so good
It works well at slicing and chopping both larger and smaller amounts of food. It's two speeds and pulse settings are good for most tasks. It's hard to project how well it will last, but it's very good now.
