It plays the latest codecs in mkv files. So everything backwards is also compatible.

You can, I have it myself. This is an official android tv device, not stock android like smartphones & unofficial android boxes. The playstore is limited and I found a lot of apps that need to be sideloaded won't work properly or won't work at all on this device. That said the MeCool works great with all compatible apps I have.
