Is the wood case worth paying the extra $100 or so vs. the tin version holding the same 120 colors? I'm on the fence...

Hi. The decision is personal. I own the 60 pencil set in the tin case as well. It's excellent to have for traveling and has taken quite a beating. The case is dented all over w/paint scratched off. Owning all 120 colors in a beautiful wooden case that shows you all of the pencils with the opening of a hinge was to me a collector's item; a special treat for myself and so I used my tax refund. Again, a personal decision but I love my wooden case.

what color is the box? It looks kinda black in the picture?

Mine is dark mahogany brown. To me, the contents of the box is more important.

Are these oil or water based?

According to my daughter, these are oil based.

what is the size of the box

57.5 CM long by 28 CM wide (32 CM wide including the beautiful brushed nickel handle. Fulluy open, it stands about 35 CM high. Hope this helps. It's gorgeous in person!
