Q: does this have a stiff cardboard backing?

It is cardboard, but not very stiff.

Q: Is the paper glossy? That is so hard to write on with a pencil.

It is not glossy. It's regular paper that you can write on.

Q: What is the length? 11 inches or 8.5 inches?

The calendar is 11 inches wide and 8.5 inches long.

Q: can I get away with putting this in a 3 ring binder? Will it fit inside the binder?

I do not have this calendar. Mine is 11" x 15". The one pictured, of which the question was asked, would seemingly fit, however one would have difficulty punching the holes for the 3-ring binder because of the spring. You could trim off the spring and then make the holes with a standard gang punch .
