Classic Philosophy for the Modern Man (Classics for the Modern Man)

A great introduction to classical philosophy.
I've always had a theoretical mind, but it took me 30 years to realize that I should look into some ancient philosophers. This is a really nice overview of some of the major ones. There are some at the latter end of the book that I couldn't even get through, but the Aristotle ethics and Marcus Aurelius stuff was great. In fact, I realized that I was raised very much along the lines of a Stoic. Since reading this book, it inspired me to look more deeply into the ancient Stoics. This book accomplished exactly what I was wanting, quick overviews of some schools of thoughts, which lead me to go more deeply into one particular school of thought. This will be a book that I give my son when he gets older.

This book is great for introducing you to some great minds and bits and pieces of their greatest works. It might take a little thought and reflection to comprehend some of it because it is wordy at times but overall I'm glad I read this book and it took me less than a week.

Excellent book
Excellent book. The author did a brilliant job in making classic philosophy accessible. The book includes some of the most interesting and relatable philosophical ideas that I found very useful. The introduction for each chapter is clear, refreshing, and very helpful. The extract from The Mediation by Marcus Aurelius, in particular, is the one I will reread again and again.Strongly recommend it to those who are interested in philosophy or those who want to live a better life.

Thinking ones way through life
I found this book author has picked good quotes from various thinkers which illustrate how one would should approach everyday living, how to live honorably and deal with mistakes and learn along the way. The volume does not give quick answers, but emphasizes how to persevere and grow.

Amazing Collection
Make sure to get the actual books too they are called classics not because they’re old but because they’re ESSENTIAL

Not what I was expecting
I was expecting a edgy revisit of some of the key pieces of philosophy over the years. This was nothing more than a brief chapter intro and a cut and paste of the original philosophers work. Disappointing.

One of my favorite reads in a while
A well-written, thoughtful, enjoyable read that addresses just what it says. One of my favorite reads in a while.

It's ok
It's ok as a little refresher course in classical philosophy. It really doesn't show how these classical ideas specifically fit into our modern life.

Gateway Philosophy- Incisive look at key thoughts the West is wanting
A succinct roundup of key works, with direct introductions to each chapter that help you retain focus of the main points where the language may get cumbersome. A great way to discover what speaks to you and go on to read that author further. Nonetheless not hard going, I'd say this is essential reading in these spiritually empty times, a definite to pass on to your fellows.

Disappointing
Of all the philosophical works that could be drawn this book does not draw on enough of the good stuff. A book more akin to Sophie's World would have given more breadth and arguably more depth. We are in an age when truth has broken down and this book does little to grapple with this. Very disappointing.
