Just use a course sponge you can find different course sponges at your local pet stores for about 4$ and cut it to size

Yes that filter would work for that type of aquarium

Q: How deep the water needs to be, can it be in 5in deep tank?

You can install this filter horizontally at the bottom of the fish tank for filtration, the minimum filter (for 1-20gallon) only needs to be higher than 2.5in in water depth. When the filter is installed vertically, the spray pipe can be exposed to the water surface, the pump part needs to be immersed in the water, and the smallest filter (for 1-20gallon) needs at least 5.3in deep water flow.
