I have not read the book (I wish I did), I had randomly gone to this to the cinema and I have now bought this movie cos I was just taken by this. It has it all, the movie is done so there are 2 story lines running simultaneously, it makes is rounded and just beautiful. The story itself is complex, but also easy to understand, romantic, dramatic, believable and not drippy either. Also, I love that it had been produced and directed by women, perhaps the reason this had been even done into a movie (although I do hypothesise here)... thus it is delicate, but powerful; soft, but also outspoken at the same time; just beautifully done. Highly recommended.

Lovely film, moving. Couldn't understand the cynical bad reviews. Aspects of the story were a bit of a stretch like Kya being left by every one of her apparently loving siblings who never returned to check on her until her brother finally did many years later. But maybe none of them realised all the others had gone too, leaving Kya alone with her abusive father. Damaged, traumatised people can behave in unpredictable ways. Kya, clearly traumatised, yet kept her strength, her solace, her soul in the marshes that she loved, and had human love from shopkeepers Jumpin' and Mabel. All well acted, especially the actors playing Kya, Milton the kind lawyer and the two warm hearted shopkeepers. Powerful twist at the end. Beautifully and tenderly filmed with music to match.

Beautiful and thought provoking. Great plot and atmospheric throughout the film - we both loved it. The lead actress deserved an Oscar for the wonderful portrayal of Kya.

Loved the book so was interested to see the film.Although not as atmospheric as the book, the characters were well portrayed and I really enjoyed the film.

Everyone in my book group enjoyed this novel. While it was a tad implausible at times I forgave the author the dramatic licence in her tale of resilience, redemption, finding your on strengths and fighting against the odds after life has dealt cruel blows!

The book was so wonderful I couldn't wait to see the film as the lead actress is also brilliant. Its no disservice to the film or actors but it can't portray what is such a precious work of literary art.
