42 is the size of the objective lens. A description of 10x42 means the binoculars are 10 power with a 42 mm objective lens. I bought a pair of the Zeiss Victory SF. My 30 year old pair of Leitz 8x40 dropped a gear. Man alive have there been some. Improvements in binocular technology. They are very bright. A little longer than I anticipated. Not significantly heavy just longer. I later got a pair of cheap Vortex to bang around with. If I see something it saves walking over there. The Zeiss put you right there. They are so much better than the Vortex or any binoculars I have ever encountered. I spent a significant amount of time checking out this purchase. There is really the big 3 of 10x42 binoculars. These were the best.
