Engaging!
DK never disappoints me! I love DK books in general because they have many vibrant, interesting visuals, with descriptions straight to the point. It’s easy to read and visually pleasing for my students. They love going to our classroom library and taking these books out. It’s their first choice!

Interesting...
DK findout! Ancient EgyptThis is a children’s book with a focus on grades 1 through 4. This is a fascinating book with 64 pages of photographs, illustrations, facts and challenges. There is a storehouse of information in this book:The Egyptians did not call Egypt; it was called BlackLand and RedLand. The Egyptians date back to 7000BCE. There were 8 caste of people, pharaoh, viziers, soldiers, scribes, merchants, craftsmen and farmers. The Egyptian Empire was made up of the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Hyksos, the Libyans, and the Nubians. Khufu, Akhenaten, Senwoseret III, Tutankhamun, Hatshepsut, and Ramses the Great were among the famous Pharaohs. “The pharaoh Snofru built three pyramids each one approximately 330 feet tall.” Learn how to make a mummy and why people wrote their names on a door frame. Did you know pharaoh had a red crown, a white crown and a blue crown? Egyptians men and women wore makeup, lipstick eyeshadow, wigs and perfumes. Their jewelry told of their status in society. The Egyptians. Beer was thick and soupy.I found their medicine of particular interest. If you have a splinter use salt and wasp dung. Lizard’s blood is for eyelashes curling the wrong direction. Snake bite was treated with beer and onion. Boil a catfish if you had a headache. There is a glossary and index in the back of this book. Most of the pages are glossy. The book is well made. The illustrations are bright colored. The photographs are clear and bright colored. This book is mesmerizing. It should peak the interest of most children to learn more about the life of the Egyptians.

Even adults that enjoy Egyptology might like this - I did- lots of pictures & facts
The information is very well laid out in this book to be fun and engaging, and also to help kids get a good sense of perspective on historical aspects and also relationships between the gods/goddesses in the Egyptian pantheon. I liked that the book emphasized that the Gods of ancient Egypt were worshiped for thousands of years, which should cover even Neopagan reconstructionists. I liked that it didn't call it a dead religion. It's full of pictures, and fun facts. It covers many really fascinating aspects of Egyptian history and religious practice. I loved that it pointed out art style differences in the traditional rulers and Akhenaten. something that really caught my interest in college art history. I loved seeing information presented in timeline format, and that they showed the Gods of Egypt on a family tree of sorts- it really helped me conceptualize the relationships between some of them, and really provided a good visual aid that led me to some independent thinking about that. I'd never really thought about how some of the Gods and Goddesses that were married were so opposite in nature.I love the book, and think it is a good book for anyone interested in Egyptian history, not just kids. It's written though so that kids who can't read well can enjoy the pictures with a verbal discussion, and kids that can read well can get enough information to whet their curiosity for learning even more.
