Haindl Tarot, Minor Arcana, Rev Ed. (The Haindl Tarot)

A new favorite.
I've only recently discovered this deck, and am now in the process of studying and working with it.I find that it keeps opening and deepening for me, and is now definitely a new favorite. What I love about it, so far, is the level of abstraction. Of course everyone feels differently about cards, and different people will bond with different decks. I'm finding that I get frustrated with the traditionaldecks that are very straight-forward in representation -- like the traditional decks, such as the Waite, butalso some of the more recent decks, like the one by the excellent Barbara Walker. She is such a font ofknowledge, and her books are essential, but her deck (for me anyway) is just too straight forward, relying on simpleone to one representation, too figural. With a deck like this, I feel a bit limited, as if I'm not being given enough "wiggleroom," something like that. I don't mean that I want to invent my own interpretation of course, just that when theimages are so completely defined, it does control even your vocabulary to a certain extent.(I wonder if anyone even knows what I'm talking about!) So the Haindl deck is very exciting for me. It feels full of energy becauseof the level of abstraction -- these cards do not pin down the meaning so much as "set it free," that's howit feels to me. They open themselves to your interpretation, because the images are so fluid -- it's morethan possible to see a whole range of different things in these cards, to let interpretations shift accordingto the context of different spreads, and therefore to form a very personal and intimateand also evolving relationship with them. I am very happy to have found them, and look forward to learningmore about them. In some decks I find the art too simplistic, also (will have to plead guilty to being a slight"art snob"), whereas in this deck it is quite sophisticated, abstract, and intriguing. It just feels alive to me.

Wildly exciting!
I'd made a comment before I had this book - and I'm waiting for the Major Arcana AND the deck. This is so far, a book so marvelous, I'm almost - almost - at a loss for words. Rachel Pollack - and Hermann Haindl, obviously - have given us such a gift. The book itself is very well written, cohesive and concise - and if you've never tried writing, it may be difficult to understand what went into this book which is done so well, that I keep wanting to cheer aloud.Others have made more sense than I'm doing at the moment, but because they have, it gives me freedom to gush.I confess to being whelmed and overwhelmed at the pletora of information and the years of study it took to get it right, and with objectvity and withoug stepping on anyone'se toes - not in a PC soppy way, but well-considered and reasonable - you know, courteous.I may suffer syncope if the Major Arcana and the deck arrive on the same day - or even the same week.

Rachel's explanations and interpretations are so beautiful and clear
I have several decks of tarot cards, but I immediately connected with the Haindl Tarot. Rachel's explanations and interpretations are so beautiful and clear.

Essential companion to the deck!
WOW - I was skeptical that a single tarot deck could really be worth writing two full books about, but this book changed my mind! Rachel Pollack does an amazing job of conveying the richness and deep meaning that Haindl put into every single card in his deck. Essential reading if you have the deck, and will make you really want the deck if you don't have it!

esoteric and personal aspects of the Haindl tarot
Tarot expert Rachel Pollack explores the symbology and personal nuances of Haindl's esoteric deck. Special attention is paid to the I Ching aspects, upright and reversed, which is helpful and to the Court cards and the myths attached to them. This deepens the reader's appreciation to what might otherwise be a perplexing deck to a novice, but which is in fact solidly within the tarot tradition, albeit with an environmentalist/ new age feel, transmuting the ancient signs for greater relevance in a nuclear age.
