Scales, Chords & Arpeggios

Solid book for learning scales on piano. Helps with fingerings and learning patterns. Used this to pass my college scale proficiency and now my child is using to learn scales.

An amazing amount of scales for almost all levels. I am currently working through the Bastien Piano Basics Level 3 books. They are great for me, and I love that they aren't just about a quick learning experience but they teach you the fundamentals as well as the vocabulary necessary to learn the music and the instrument. The Arpeggios and chords are helpful since they are all listed by the key. To me, there is so much to learn with the piano, and it is great to have this as a reference.

I didn't realize this would be so flimsy and short. But my friend, a four-time soloist at Carnegie Hall's Weill Room who taught piano in high school, recommended it for me. At 47, I went back to piano (35 years since quitting classical). It's helpful but very bare. Not much explanation. Just a bunch of sheet music, basically. If you want more music theory/analysis, get another book. But this is cheap and gives a good sense of drills.

I use this book all the time to practice scales, particularly in the odd keys that I got away with not knowing when I was younger. Pianist debate the value of practicing scales; I guess I come down on the side of it being a good thing. They seem to help my fingering, speed, and confidence in my fingers knowing where to go. You can focus on that without the complexity of at the same time learning a real piece of music. Just for 15 minutes or so.

For those who struggle with sight reading and things like that please buy this book! I tell anyone who will listen, especially beginners, that this is the standard.

Best book I've ever seen on scales and chords. No frills. Kind of thin. Easy to read. Cheap price. Everything you need for your drills.

I have been using this book with my students for years. Easy to follow fingerings, has the relative minor scale immediately following the major. Follows the circle of fifths. Just wish the print could be larger as some students find it difficult to read.
