Review: Overly hyped - "In the Mood for Love" just didn't click with me. It gets so caught up in showing off its technical cinematographic craftsmanship that it loses the fluidity, cohesiveness and emotional grip of the story. The acting didn't work for me either—it felt stiff and overly self-conscious. And the chemistry between the couple, which is the film's core, ends up falling flat. It's way too hyped. Investing on expensive Criterion release of this movie is not recommended for a first time viewer. Would have been worth a one time watch if it were available on a Rs 200 DVD. Review: Incredible Filmmaking - Absolute masterpiece! One of my favourite movies of all time!

Less is more
WARNING: A few minor spoilers. IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000, Wong Kar-wai, Director), tells the story of neighbors whose spouses are having an affair, and how they cope with it. Because of this couple’s moral compass, and not wanting to stoop to the level that their cheating spouses have gone to, there are boundaries in the relationship, though there’s love. This love, coupled with their internal struggles, becomes an emotional affair. This ‘couple’ still bickers and does things that typical married couples do, but the relationship doesn’t blossom into something more. In this film, less is more (romantically), and the prevailing message that ties everything together is their ‘secret’ that’s whispered into a hollow part of a tree at the end of the film. However, this film has its share of images depicting sexiness (several shots below the waist of women in dresses), giving it the look and feel of being sexy without being sexual. The film has a ‘rhythm’ to it, highlighted by its main music theme, though I think it’s overplayed overall. What truly makes the film work overall is its absorbing plot, some light humor sprinkled in, and the overall elegance of it through excellent cinematography. Clocks are often shown, which is thought-provoking. In the Mood for Love is a film for adults, and one that the older crowd can relate to. I always love a strong ending in a film, and this one has just that. The Criterion Collection blu ray is loaded with extras and a thick booklet that expands on the film’s themes, etc. I recommend this film and its extras as essential to your collection.

A bittersweet masterpiece of cinema.
Perhaps not fair because I have a long time crush on Maggie Cheung she is lovely in this take on the short story also used for Lost In Translation. Such dresses! What wonderful wardrobe. Where did she get that daffodil print dress!? I love the cinematography and close ups. I understand a lot of this was ad-libbed and perhaps that may be why some scenes were repeated with different dialogue. When Maggie breaks down and says “I didn’t think it would hurt so much” the emotional outpouring seems genuine and so powerful. The direction to draw such raw emotion from such a simple bittersweet story is a master class. I loved the long quiet scenes through dark tunnels of reds and greens it is a beautiful movie. So far I purchased 6 copies and distributed 5 of them to friends but I think I am the only one who managed to watch the whole thing. So i know this is not one for everyone. Trying to explain the savor of danish blue in a Kraft cheese slice world is not easy. Sorry spoiler alert....nothing blows up. Pity it seems to be a difficult specialist film to some as it bears repeat viewings and nuances are revealed with each screening. See it if you can.
