Yes! Roomy enough for a few books, binders, and a jacket. It has a padded sleeve for a Chromebook, or tablet.

Would use this for a gym bag. Will need to fit shoes, shorts or sweats, shirt, towel and hygiene items. Is this big enough?

Oh absolutely it would be big enough I use it for college and I fit my computer three notes books and about five medium size books inside of it. Plenty of room and lots of smaller pockets for hygiene stuff as well.
