The Russian Side, The Russian Women's Side
I purchased the 1972 version of The Dawns Here Are Quiet which lead me to purchase the 2015 remake. There has been criticism of the remake, however I find both films of high quality. It is not often we see the "Russian side" nor that many Russian females fought in WWII. The remake has far more explosive action, the cinematography outstanding and the brutality of what ordinary Russians faced under the Nazi conveyed as realistically as it can be. After reading the excellent book THE UNWOMANLY FACE OF WAR, I became interested in the Russian side. Of course, there has yet to be a movie made of the horrible suffering many Russians endured not only under the boot of the Nazi but even under the terror of the Stalin grinding machine. A fine, fine movie. I wish there could have been more former female combatants allowed to write of what they endured.

The Dawns Here Are Quiet / A zori zdes tihie (4 episodes)
Fantastic story about a Russian sgt during WWII in charge of managing an anti-aircraft gun with a crew of newly assigned female recruits. The interaction between the sgt and the soldiers is both funny and sad as they learned to work together. For the guys, the soldiers are beautiful, if that is your thing, you won't regret watching this movie. For the rest of us, two specialized Nazi soldiers have been spotted in their heavily wooded and deserted Russian forest. To find and stop them, the sgt and a five of the soldiers set out to cut them off at the pass. The forest has its natural beauty and dangers. Each of these female soldiers have their own stories to tell. There is an older 1972 movie that is in black and white and is also very good. I own both version. Both movies are currently on Netflix, or is it on Amazon?

An Excellent Movie - Bringing to life the human side of the Great Patriotic War
An excellent movie; not so much a remake as a retelling of the original story. There is depth and insight here, with the emotional impact of Ballad of a Soldier. Much as I really like the original, I think that I prefer this one ever more. The TV series is truly another significant milestone in Russian cinema, bringing to life for the next generation the human side of the Great Patriotic War. That war was a cataclysm that devoured tens of millions of lives and caused unimaginable suffering, suffering on a scale that is beyond human comprehension. But this movie, this story of six simple soldiers is something we can understand; and that understanding penetrates not only the mind, but speaks directly to the heart of the viewer.

"Comrade Sergeant"
A Russian mini series of 2015 that provides great character depth in the telling. A seemingly backwater post in May 1942 becomes important when a Waffen SS unit parachutes into an area forest in order to sabotage and prepare for an on coming offensive. "Comrade Sergeant" with a patrol of female assigned anti-aircraft soldiers proceeds to stop this threat. The story line evolves with great direction and effect. One cares more about the individual women as their personal backgrounds are viewed through periodic "flashbacks". The Germans rarely speak and advance through the forest with veils hanging from their helmets. This and repeated " camera shots" of their boots moving over forest terrain all lend a sinister aura to the invaders. To paraphrase Comrade Sergeant.. They are not human, not soldiers, they are Nazis. One will almost tear, with the Russian's heroic effort.

Great movie DVD
This is a great movie in Russian with English subtitles about the Second world war on the Russian front in the rear areas. A german paratrooper unit is behind enemy lines and a group of Russian women recruits are the only thing that can stop them along with their male commander. The movie is full of suspense and very well done. It keeps you glued to the tv to see what is going to happen next. It also has a great ending.

An excellent tale of the Eastern Front in WW2
An excellent tale of the Eastern Front in WW2. It shows that Russian cinema has come a LONG way from the Soviet day especially with films about the Great Patriotic War. The story is well crafted and character development is very good. Some subtitles leave a few words out but that is not a problem. Indeed, I found this to be the best recent war movie from any country...and I have seen most of them! You will not be disappointed.

Remake of a celebrated Soviet movie
I have very much liked this Russian television series, although, after having also watched the first version, I have to admit that I would probably prefer the old Soviet film - both are very similar and somehow, different at the same time. The Soviet film is mostly in black-and-white, and only occasionally in color, while the Russian film is totally in color, with splendid pictures of Karelia.

A war film with a difference.
Excellent film. The back stories to the five girl soldiers are so poignant. In Russian, but with English sub-titles, the story is easy to follow.
