I don't know if they're dyed or if the colors will run, but these are very delicate, I wouldn't use them outside.

Q: would these be too big for a pencil christmas tree

They are true to size..4 inches and yes, maybe too large for a pencil tree. I did order a smaller assortment..(Like yourself I made a mistake) I had to re-order this assortment of birds. They are in the Window and are well visible. So check for a smaller bird...they are available and I know this because I ordered the smaller ones by mistake. Good luck.
