Can keep a 8year old very busy
Very sturdy toy, with age appropriate instructions. Very engaging toy, which child can work with independently. Very good STEM activities.

Excellent!
My daughter received this for her seventh birthday because she had been so excited by the electronics module she had done at school. This excellent kit has built on that excitement and has sustained her interest for considerable periods of time. It comes in a fairly substantial box which is well designed and has a plastic inner tray with sections to store all the components. What makes this different to other electronics toys is the way the pieces connect - they are easy to join through "press studs" and there is a clear plastic base on which to place your creation as you build (although the plastic base isn't actually big enough for the biggest circuits. There are well over 100 different circuits to build, including a fan, (which can also be made to fly), a burglar alarm, several varieties of radio, doorbells, and a lie detector so plenty to be going on with! We haven't done them all yet, but so far, every single one has worked really well. We have blown quite a few fuses through user error (although the users are now more careful so it doesn't happen as often!), but they are easy enough to replace so it isn't a major problem. The thorough instruction manual does explain what each component is although it is possible to build the circuits just using the numbers and colours of the various parts. This is positive because you can just get on and build without knowing what a "capacitor" is or does for example, but on the other hand, you may not necessarily be learning as much as you could be because you don't actually need any knowledge to build the circuits other than just the instructions. I guess that really means that this kit can be what you make it. This isn't the cheapest electronics kit on the market but of the several we've already bought, this is easily the best. It is sturdy and will provide hours of fun to children over about the age of 6 with some adult assistance, and with increasing independence the older the child gets. A really recommended buy, and if your child has expressed an interest in electronics, I wouldn't hesitate to get them this. It is definitely worth the money.

Excellent present
The kit came on time and well packed. It is well made and contains a considerable number of electronic components. Each is clearly marked so everyone, whether a complete novice or experienced in electronics, should have no difficulty identifying what each item is. There is a booklet containing a large number of experiments, each accurately described and with a very clear picture showing how each element should be positioned and clipped together. Everything we tried over the holiday worked perfectly. For a child, there are some exciting circuits that will hold their attention, just like a game. I would recommend the simple motor circuit, with a loosely coupled rotary fan blade, that can be ejected vertically like a spinning frizby. You can refine it from being simply attention-grabbing, to a slightly more skilled game where judgement is required to try and make the spinner reach a particular height. As the child grows older, it will be possible to use the kit to explain and teach some of the simple electric and electronic principles involved. There are PNP and NPN devices, light sensitive cells, a motor, a speaker, a chip capable of producing music or recording and playing back voice from a microphone, etc, etc. I was lucky enough to have been trained in electronics and so can develop usage in this way. But I would suggest that, for those not of the same bent, the kit could perhaps be enhanced even more either by including some information along these lines or by referencing simple tutorials that could be purchased later. Just a thought. All in all, I thoroughly recommend this kit, both for its immediate impact and for its potential for future educational use.

Missing part
I purchased this for a birthday present for my grandson and he is really enjoying experimenting with the various tasks. Good quality product but the kit was missing the bulb holder and instead had two microphones, they look very similar. I just need to work out how to get a replacement part to complete the set.

Its finally happened!
Over the years since my son and daughter were born i have bought many toys and games for them as you might imagine and every time without fail i have helped them open the packaging and thought to myself (shaking head*) what a load of junk! Things were never this poorly made when i was a child! followed by cringing at the realisation that i had morphed into my own parents. What a joy to finally break the cycle, this was just an extra that my son hadnt asked for but after reading the reviews i thought could be fun to work through together. It is brilliantly colour coded, well built and labelled with excellent clear instructions and immeadiately compulsive play for both child and adult. My son loved the helicopter and light circuits and despite being only his 6th birthday he spent many hours working with me on the MANY different experiments and when i awoke the next few mornings i found he was already building the simple circuits following the instructions on his own. It has already taught him many fundamentals of electronics and as the circuits increase in difficulty it will be in use for a long time to come. It is not a cheap product but the first for me i have actually thought was worth the price, i cannot say enough positive things about Hotwires. Great Fun, Educational, Well Built and Inspirational Play. Thank you Hotwires =)

My husband had fun memories of doing this sort of things when he was a kid, so we bought this for our 6 year old daughter (she had actually showed an interest in "building a computer" but we thought we'd start with the basics: circuits) and I have to say it exceeded our expectations. At the very least, it is like a puzzle. It also teaches them "testing" (the circuit does not work? go back and check that everything is like in the diagram). It is also a confidence-building toy (the child can do build a circuit and then see the result, which is very satisfying). You can make all sorts of amazing things: fan, radio, burglar alarm, sound recorder, etc. Last week she had the idea of replacing the snap-on wires with real wires, and then she built her own little circuit! A truly fantastic toy!
