45 years after Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour filmed ‘Live At Pompeii’ in the legendary Roman Amphitheatre there, he returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his No.1 album ‘Rattle That Lock’. The performances were the first-ever rock concerts for an audience in the stone Roman amphitheatre, and, for two nights only, the 2,600 strong crowd stood exactly where gladiators would have fought in the first century AD. The show includes songs from throughout David's career, as well as many Pink Floyd classics, including 'One Of These Days', the only song that was also performed at the band’s 1971 show. Both concerts also saw very special performances of 'The Great Gig In The Sky' from 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' which David rarely plays as a solo artist. The 2-disc concert CD was produced by David Gilmour, and mixed by Andy Jackson and David Gilmour. David Gilmour Live At Pompeii’ shows an artist at the top of his artistic game, performing incredible material with his world-class band, in a unique setting on one very special occasion. Gilmour lives up to his high standards - No MP3 download with vinyl box set though (a bit tight)
First of all, I've scored this as a 4 star rating for one simple reason: When you spend this sort of money on a vinyl product these days, it's become customary to include a link to an MP3 download on digital means. This sadly doesn't contain one which I thought was a little tight but... that's my only gripe & it's out of the way now... That said, the packaging of this pack is of the dramatic visual impact we've come to expect from Gilmour... Heavy-feeling vinyl adds an air of quality even before the first record hits the turntable. Mine arrived too late to listen to yesterday but I've been through all 8 sides this afternoon & it's nothing short of stunning. David Gilmour is still at the top of his performing & production game & in spite of his direct involvement in production of this pack, it's lost little of the flair that goes with a live performance - got that balance bang on, in my humble opinion. Depth in all sound aspects, a couple of quirks in Great Gig & one or two other spots (call it creative licence) but sounds great, plus a very moving tribute to Rick Wright, who left us 8 years ago in there as well. Again, the maturity of Gilmour's brand showing through in all of his work here, especially in front of the mic. Having seen him at the Royal Albert Hall 2 years ago on the Rattle That Lock tour, this musical journey triggers so many memories of that tremendous night in London & I've found one or two goosebumps as I've listened... well more "absorbed" the events of Pompeii. In summary, any Gilmour/Pink Floyd fan would be thrilled to find this in their Christmas stocking... or even sooner Shine on, folks... :) Additional Note - Sadly I've found a skip on Side 8, NOT what I expect after paying almost £60 on a set like this... Hmmm That's going to take it down to a 3-star rating sadly as I KNOW it's not the gear I'm using.

WOW!
Being a Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan, I ordered this to keep my PF/DG collection up to date. I thought this new live recording by David Gilmour would be just like his other live recordings which I found to be dull and boring. But much to my surprise, this one is just totally the opposite. I received this one yesterday and have gotten through Disc 1 and was totally amazed at the energy in this CD. It's a fantastic combination of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour solo songs. If this recording doesn't have you up on your feet and wake you up, nothing will. I never cared for Floyd's Great Gig In The Sky so I just bypass that one. One Of These Days really impressed me. This song was originally the first track on Floyd's 1968 album Meddle. I was totally blown away by this live version. The original studio version has nothing on this live version. I was in the parking lot at the park at 9:30 last night listening to this CD. I had this blasting and you probably could have heard it miles away. Great tune when you're alone, in your car in the dark. I'm sorry I didn't see this concert for real. Judging by the songs and the energy eminating from this CD, I would venture to say the concert itself was awesome. This is one powerful recording. All you have to do is listen to the audience in this. I am absolutely blown away by this CD. I've heard some brilliant live recordings before but David Gilmour Live At Pompeii has got to be the best one I've heard. I don't normally by concert DVDs but after listening to this, I have to get the DVD now. I more than highly recommend this item to any Pink Floyd/David Gilmour fan.

Live in Pompeii
An absolutely superb album and even better on vinyl which is beautifully packaged. Staggered by David Gilmour’s guitar playing which is outstanding. Multi talented and an incredible musician. Nothing else to say other than listen to this album and while you’re at it listen to his latest album Luck and Strange which is a brilliant piece of music. This is a guy who is in his late 70s and still continuing to produce outstanding albums

Up pompeii - all the way !
David's previous live album,is the greatest live album of all time (in my humble opinion of course). To compare this new album to Gdansk, would be most unfair,i feel.so I will review pompeii on its own merit: Historically important, both in pink Floyd and Roman history; The performance from David Gilmour and his band is excellent, not quite flawless in places, but pretty dam good all the same. DG is an underrated vocalist and they certainly stand up,as do his guitar playing over 2 cd's worth on this live package.another reviewer criticises his guitar playing and singing, being ageist and disrespectful to the great man - shame on him. The set list focuses on recent songs from Rattle that lock, including A boat lies waiting - a fitting tribute to the late, great Richard Wright, and 'Floyd favourites including; Fat old sun,High hopes and rarely performed Great gig in the sky (this effort - not too good on the whole - sorry). To get back on a positive note;this is a very atmospheric live album, the venue could be a clue to this. Having Chuck leavel (Almond bros band, Rolling stones studio and live contributor et al),is a welcome bonus.his keyboard solo on Fat ol Sun is exquisite. The set concludes with Run like Hell - a live 'Floyd favourite and the epic, classic Comfortably numb.have you listened to David's vocals and guitar playing on this? Tone deaf reviewer out there (had to be said). To conclude: an excellent live album and package presentation.Thank you David Gilmour;you're a true star.
