The Essential Enochian Grimoire: An Introduction to Angel Magick from Dr. John Dee to the Golden Dawn

Good introductory text
The overall impression I got of this book is that it is aimed at those who are already sold on the idea of Enochian Magic in principal, and would like to learn more about its background.Generally the quality of Aaron Leitch's writing is high, however: one should observe a serious caveat when reading this book. This is not a *complete* text - but rather the first or introductory part of an ongoing series on Enochian Magic. So for example there is a description of "Gebofal," a sophisticated Enochian self-initiation rite which takes place over 49 days, involving the Enochian Keys and the leaves of Liber Loagaeth. Whilst there is a full description of the daily rite, the key component - the leaves of Loageaeth - are missing from this book. Aaron tells us that he will be publishing his own version of Liber Loagaeth separately, in due course. The majority of the book describes "Dee-purist Enochiana." So called "Neo-Enochiana" is limited in discussion to the practices of the The Golden Dawn . Aaron mentions other manifestations of "Neo-Enochiana" - e.g. Crowley's Aethyr-work which was published as The Vision and the Voice - but does not go into the same technical, ritualistic detail. The pseudonymous "Thomas Rudd" is dealt with even less, which is a shame as I would have been interested in a discussion of his linking the spirits of the lesser key of Solomon with the seven ensigns of creation (see: Treatise on Angel Magic: Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks ).The Enochian work of the Aurum Solis and the Chaos Magick movement are not mentioned at all - although this constitutes no great loss.- Alex Sumner, author of Taromancer .

So many works on Enochian are easily lost in the myriad of complexities of Enochian
I found Leitch's work here to be a clear, well researched and accessible work on the Enochian subject. So many works on Enochian are easily lost in the myriad of complexities of Enochian. The book reads well on first attempts, the second reading is when the work really does begin to sink in with increased understanding.

Do you like truncated pyramids? Me neither…
I thoroughly enjoyed this primer for the Enochian practice. The initial chapters give a nice overview of the period and its characters. This gives the reader a background through which to better understand the system. The later chapters cover the practical applications of Dee and Kelley’s work. These procedures are explained in a concise manner which seemed very useful to a beginner such as myself.I particularly enjoyed information surrounding the Book of Loagaeth and the Claves Angelicae; these are the components which drew me to the system in the first place. As the text ventured into the realms of Neo-Enochia, especially the Golden Dawn content, I found myself getting a little overwhelmed. This may be because the attributes associated with the watchtower cells and the methods of discovering them are so numerous and complex.Regardless I find myself less compelled by the Neo-Enochian approach and this may have had an impact on how much of it my mind was willing to absorb.I give a firm recommendation to anyone intrigued by Dee and Kelley’s work.

Arrived very damaged, quite upsetting
This book would have been such a nice addition to our collection of occult books, sadly this wasn't to happen we received it about half an hour ago and unfortunately it has arrived very damaged. On the front cover inside is a deep crease that covers half the page as seen in the attached picture, the cover is also torn and bent and the pages are warped. Really quite upset about this

Great Book.
Simply beautiful! You can literally know cero about magic and by reading this book (which is simple and easy reading although deep) you’ll know everything you need to know to go ahead and practice Enochian rituals. It’s a real modern practical gromoire.

From skepticism to satisfaction
When speaking with Aaron Leitch previously to reading this work he claimed that John Dee left a working system scattered within his collected works, I thought the claim was unbelievable. After all, I have been an Enochian practitioner for nearly 10 years and I put a great deal of effort into making a system work out of the original material. I knew there were gaps and I immediately became suspicious of his claim. However the quality of his other works had left a good impression on me, so I gave it a shot. That being said there indeed remained some gaps that Aaron did fill with his own conclusion but I am ever thankful that they were easily identified as substitutions to allow a clear understanding of when the historical work ends and Aaron’s begins. Also I am greatful that these substitutions were rooted in the magical systems that John Dee was familiar with and appeared to influence the creation of the Enochian system as to make them a possible authentic practice of the system. Also, I am astonished at how few gaps there actually were. Far fewer than what I had thought. As a conclusion to this work I do feel that Aaron’s claim that Dee left a working system to be true and I have found this work to be the most complete reconstruction of an original enochian system that I have yet to come across. The last bit I’ll speak to here is that I am greatful that Aaron separated the historical work from the so called “neo-Enochian” which later emerged from the Golden Dawn. I have compared countless books on the subject to the original material of a John Dee because the author didn’t identify the “neo” from the historical. This separation is huge to the ones searching for the historical system. This work is fantastic to the already familiar Enochian Practitioner as it is easy to connect the dots from this work to the knowledge you already have. I could see the countless references to be a bit overwhelming for the beginner but that should not detract them from acquiring this book. Overall I am exceedingly satisfied with this work. Great job with this one Aaron!
