My plate to more of a platter size that is transparent in places .. is the material coloured ? Will I see it through the plate ?

Think of it like a light flesh coloured fabric Elastoplast. If your plate is widely transparent you will see the disc through it. I hung a 4inch diameter on a 12 inch rectangular platter so it will certainly hold the weight.

Can it be used to hang plates in garden? Is it safe for outdoor use

I doubt it as they have to be dampened to release plate from disc so if it got wet it would be disastrous.

What depth is the hanger?

Please would have been nice! The distance from the centre of the hanger to the nail position is three inches.
