Q: Is the noise cancelling good?

I used them on 5 fights over the last couple of weeks and they worked really well blocking out the aircraft noise and background noise of other people but i was always aware if someone was talking to me directly like the air hostess. hope that give you an idea of how they work and battery life is great the single aaa lasted for over 24 hours of fight time.

Q: Do these feature active noise cancellation? And can you turn that on without having to listen to music, just to make things nice and quiet?

Yes and yes in short. You need to be made aware that you can't unplug the cable like you can from some other headphones (there's a microphone built into a wire).
