Brain melting story that is proper hard sci/fi
I've been a fan of Greg bears for years and I was worried about this foray into the halo universe, computer games tend to have very little in the way of plot behind them. However the story here is rich and deep as any Greg bear tale. It takes the bare bones of the halo back story and weaves a complex brain twisting story on top of it.Overall it's hard to read but worth sticking with it to continue the series to its end

It makes me dream...
I am a Halo fan so I had to get this book. I waited until the softcover version came out and started reading it. I was a bit curious about the story because it is far away from the Halo universe we know of. But that curiousity was answered with great satisfaction. The story is awesome and it reads really well, great writing. It is still Halo and many things are related to the terminals in Halo 3. It is a must for everybody that likes the Halo universe and is curious about the history of it. Even if you are new to 'Halo' you can read this because the red line through the Halo universe is pretty simple in fact (and this book is in the beginning). You go back to the far past and meet the Forerunners. The Forerunners are an awesome civilizition/species, I wish our world was a bit more Forerunner-ish lol. The scale of their world is behind words and their role in the universe is the most noble cause a species can have. Look I'm starting to dream again! Looking forward to the next two parts because that universe is so huge and well designed that I still need to discover a lot. The book has not the same dimension than the others (Ghosts of Onyx, ...) but hey that is not a problem. And like I am used to, Amazon delivered it fast and in good state.

Shockingly bad.
Is this the same Greg Bear that bought us gems like Eon and Hull Zero Three? It reads like some juvenile twaddle cobbled together for a bunch of gormless gamers who've never read a book in their lives. Shallow, monolithic characters, shoddy and repetitive dialogue. If you want to remember the author for his seminal works, don't give this pile of excre*ment a second glance.

Starting at the beginning with prequels
I have never played the game, nor read any of the books. In fact, I know nothing at all about Halo, except there is a lot of stuff out there. When I saw that Greg Bear had written what I think is a prequel, I thought that would be a good point to start - do the prequels, and then move on to what, I suppose is the main course; the books that have been around from the beginning. It certainly inhabits a different world and I am not sure whether any of the characters, or indeed life forms make it through to the later books, but I enjoyed how they were all fleshed out. The settings are described in detail, albeit from a mostly alien perspective, and you soon come to inhabit that world and take interest in the characters and what happens to them. This book certainly focuses on the young Forerunner and, as I start book two, I see that other characters are coming to the fore.I really enjoyed this book and on the strength of it, I have downloaded 2 and 3.My only, slight gripe, is to do with the odd typo here and there, particularly near the beginning but that seems to settle down.

This book starts of the new trilogy in a fantastic way
Halo: Cryptum is about the origins of the Didact. This book introduces the characters central to the continuing plot of Halo - the Forerunner race, and the Precursor race. These two races are the future, and in some ways the past (without spoiling Primordium) of the Halo franchise, and therefore are vital to anyone wanting to fully understand the Halo plot. Greg Bear does a fantastic job at introducing the series here and leaving it on a cliffhanger that will instantly make you want the second part (imagine how this felt for those of us who had to wait eighteen months to get the next part of the story!). This book is followed by Primordium - read this after too to enhance your knowledge and for your own enjoyment because it is just so fantastically written! This is then followed by the conclusion, Silentium, which is the best conclusion to a trilogy I have ever read! Go for it! :)

A valuable addition to the Halo saga, albeit a slow paced one.
Greg Bear has done what he could with this story. Unlike most of the other Halo books I've read, this story is much more slow paced and technical. As a Halo fan, it was a no-brainer for me to read the prequel to the entire saga. While I enjoy the depth and clarity that Bear brings to the series, there is much I miss from Eric Nylun's style of writing.

Excelente

This book makes me thirsty for sci-fi !!!
This book has been masterfully crafted! One of my favourites, and is made better if you already have a lot of Halo knowledge even though it’s not required at all. With how massive and connected the Halo Universe is, that is truly remarkable. Curiosity and mystery are key to all great hard core sci-fi, and you get that in just the right amount here. It differs from many other Halo novels in a great way, with a lot less emphasis on military warfare which i think was the perfect decision and fits the storyline and characters well! All in all, you will never regret picking this novel up.Keep learning and keep loving my fellow human companions!

Paper quality =/
The story's good, that's why I bought it, but the paper quality is not so good. The quality of the cover feels nice, however the pages not so. I guess that's the risk of a -kind of- blind buy.

SHOCKING Forerunner Internal Dispute + The Flood + HALO
This is the start of a trilogy detailing the rise of the Forerunners in the Halo world. The first book is by Greg Bear as is the second. In this start to the Forerunner Saga we meet a very young Forerunner named Bornstellar Makes Eternal Lasting who just can't sit still it appears. He is obsessed with the past and sneaks away to look for lost treasures.Contrary to his Dad's instructions he strikes out for a planet called Erde-Tyrene where it is rumoured that ancient Forerunner and Precursor technology lies waiting to be discovered.Bornstellar finds two humans that are willing to take him to a special place that is hidden from direct site either on land or from the air. There the young Forerunner activates an ancient cryptum that contains a warrior who has been asleep for over a thousand years.Soon Bornstellar and his two human guides are on a ship with the warrior and on their way to stop a plot to destroy the centre of Forerunner Technology. Along the way Bornstellar is linked to the warrior as he mutates to a higher state in the Forerunner hierarchy.Great forces are at odds with the Forerunner political elite and we are introduced to not only Halo and what they were created for, but also the background to the Flood, and the Ark.This book is a great start to describing in more detail how the Forerunner dominance of space occurred and who their enemies were.I can't wait to get a copy of the second book which came out this month (January 2012)

Great science fiction
Awesome book for science fiction fans, a great read even for those who aren't familiar with Halo. Although I don't like the direction the Halo lore has been going, Cryptum is a fantastic standalone that brings the world of an advanced alien civilization to life. A novel more geared towards science-fantasy fans than military ones.

Totally disapointed
I am a big fan of Greg Bear, had about every book he wrote earlier. So I was very happy to find a new book to read. But halas, this is absolutlely unlike any Greg Bear novel, it is linear, the caracters are boring, the setting is crude, the story made from all the overused tricks of fantasy barely wrapped in a sci-fi pretense, and obviously made specially for teenagers. In fact, I would have hated it when I was myself an avid sci-fi reader teenager .I guess Mr Bear have bills as anyone. I had no way to know that this is a derivative from a video game, it is not on the description. But I feel cheated.

Must read for fans of the Halo lore.
If you're a fan of Halo, don't give buying it a second thought. The book is rather slow to boot but redeems itself soon enough. The revelations made about the history of the Forerunners is sure to get any Halo fan salivating.

No lo he terminado de leer, pero el libro se ve muy interesante. Una historia que desconocía. Estoy complacido con la calidad del libro, buen tamaño y bien cuidado.
