Q: Is it possible to use usb sticks with this console for extra memory? 500gb is to much both in price & memory. 12gb is not enough. Thanks

You can't use USB sticks as extra storage, but you can use them to back up game saves, etc. Better to buy a caddy and a hard drive (say, 250 or 320Gb?) and insert it into the 12Gb version for cheaper than the 500Gb version.

Q: Is this PS3 backwards compatible? Will I be able to play PS2 games on it?

Absolutely. You can play any PS2 or 3 game provided they are not "pirate". You cannot play PS1 games HOWEVER on the PlayStation network (which is already on your console) you have the option to purchase older games such as the original Spyro trilogy and I believe they also sell Crash which are PS1 games but they are downloaded and do not have discs. This is the only way to play them. I suggest if you want to play lots of PS3 or download PS1 games then you should purchase a PS3 with MUCH more memory than this (500G) or purchase the hard drive update which will give you more room as 12GB can allow you to play and have about 3-4 PS3 games saved and 3 small PS1 games and one film on the hard drive. To continue playing lots of games you have to delete the game from the PS3 once complete, this does not delete any trophies and internet is free with your own broadband connection.

Q: does this come with hdmi cable

Some come with more accessories than others. Read the description for the item you buy. Condition varies. Persevere when setting up, you can read some people give low scores because they don't know what they're doing. Crazy.

Q: If i buy an expandable hdd for this model does it fit inside the console, or will it sit outside of the console the same way it would with a pc?

You will need a 2.5" internal HDD and a ps3 hard drive bracket sold separately. It will be internal, watch a YouTube video for guidance on how to install it.
