Tough and gritty Hong Kong action cinema
Taking notes from a true story, Elite Force: Operation Mekong blends hardcore ballistic action with true crime elements. If you're an action genre fan and enjoy the military angle, you'll probably have a blast. After Chinese vessels were attacked on the Mekong River, intelligence suggested that a notorious local drug cartel was involved. In this story, our elite team of narcotic officers are dispatched to take down the suspected drug lord. If taken as a factual account, this film stretches the truth a lot, but what we really want is full on action, and it doesn't disappoint there. It stars the talented Eddie Peng and is directed by Dante Lam who previously brought us Beast Stalker, Sniper and his gritty, realistic depiction of action is well known. It's more close quarters and rough than a lot of martial arts fare, but works well within the context. For anyone familiar with the nuances of action design, it's handled by Stephen Tung Wai, known from his work in Twin Dragons, Hero, Bodyguards and Assassins and more. He even directed the under-appreciated Jet Li movie, Hitman, which is cool. In this regard, the action is in very good hands. Mekong is an entertaining, tense action flick with a great team behind it.
