Q: Do these suffer from shine like graphite and can they be used over graphite pencil?

They are just graphite. Steadtler use the word ‘carbon’ in their mechanical pencil leads, but it’s not meant in the same way as Wolff’s carbon pencils or similar, which are non-graphite. These are just like staedtlers blue 4b Mars lumograph pencils in texture, shine and degree of hardness. That said, they’re very good and I find I can get a super point on these compared to other brand’s 4b 2mm leads. There’s a definite quality feel to them.

Q: What is the plastic bit in the end of the case? I assumed it was a sharpener but mine is just a piece of plastic. Nothing inside to sharpen the lead.

The small plastic coloured end caps provided in our lead boxes are hardness/degree indicators. This allows you to easily identify the lead hardness when using multiple leads. 4H = light yellow, 2H = red, H = orange, HB = black, B = blue, 2B = violet, 4B = Bordeaux The colored caps can easily be exchanged for the original cap (pull off the original cap from the barrel and insert the colored cap of choice).
