Impossible Dreams
This is a book to be read on many levels. On one level it is the story of impossible dreams. The father is consumed with the desire to fly. "Such a busy, bossy dream that would not leave him alone..."On another level, there's a shimmering poignancy about losing precious times with his child. "Day and night he sewed and stitched and sawed and hammered...But sometimes there was silence. My father would appear and stare at the ocean with tired, distant eyes. I would sit on his lap until he remembered me."Yet the moving relationship between father and son has a bitter sweet legacy and one that carries through to the next generation. "And now I have my own son. What will he do I wonder if my father's dream should visit him? Loss and fulfilment are twin themes held in tension in this poignant story.Poetic prose woven between beautifully intricate pictures makes this an irresistible, thought provoking read. A children's story but definitely for the adults too!

A beautiful gift
I bought this for my son in law whose parenting of my grandchildren I am very impressed with, I loved the story and the illustrations are memorable. I makes for a lovely grand-dad/dad story to read to their boys, though my 4 year old grand-daughter loved it also

Simply Beautiful
This book is so beautiful and poignant. While I enjoyed reading it myself, I have bought it to share with the children I teach in upper Key Stage 2. It has given us lots to discuss, and been a prompt for the children's own writing.
