A great piece of kit
I have been smoking food for many years and have two smokers; one portable the size of a large biscuit tin which burns dust and will take a couple of trout with ease; the second about the size of a water butt which burns both dust and wood chips and can handle several joints of meat/whole chickens or sides of salmon at a time. This little gem nicely fills the gap between the two, whilst at the same time providing a cheap introduction to hot smoking. So what is it? A 9" x 4" lidded metal box with holes drilled in both the lid and box, into which you place either dust or wood chips before putting it directly onto the coals of your, already heated up, BBQ. The contents heat up and smoulder rather than burn, thus giving a longer smoke-producing period. Food to be smoked is placed on the BBQ grill in the normal way and after use, like most of the excellent bbqmaster range of equipment, it is dishwasher safe. It is also half the price of the Webber own-brand smoking box, if you can find one. Simple. Not quite. A few dos and don'ts. It will only work with a covered, kettle-type BBQ such as a Webber. It will not work with open BBQs or fire pits. Only use quality dust or wood chips, both readily available; never use treated, painted or resinous wood. Don't invite friends and neighbours round to sample your first efforts, it will only end in tears. Instead, get used to the smoking times for various foods and the flavours imparted by different woods. There are many books on smoking food, which cover both techniques and recipies, available from Amazon so invest in a couple. However, quite a few are by American authors so some of the recepies may not be to British tastes. A good, and inexpensive, starter is Kieth Erlandson's Home Smoking and Curing. An inexpensive, great piece of kit. EnjoyPSIf anyone knows of the whereabouts of the Holy Grail, a broken barrel formaly used to mature malt whisky, please get in touch!

Essential for gas bbqs
This was a good buy.I have an charcoal oil drum and a gas bbq (excessive I know, but i like options). This works well on both. On my gas Weber it fits/balaces safely into the triangular groves of the burner covers (so literally just under the grill plates). It smokes really well, and makes the gas cooked food a lot smokier like it has been on the charcoal bbq.The charcoal drum gets incredibly hot, I tend to put this next to, but not directly on the coals, It gets hot enough to smoke well there. As you must be aware, the key to this working is getting your wood chips soaked correctly. I leave mine in an old mayonnaise jar with a lid, with a mix of water and whisky in. So they are always soaked and ready to go when needed, and I can just top up with water/chips whenever I use any.I haven't had any problems with this warping etc, works just as well know as when I bought it.

Warped and twisted
After first use the metal box has warped and twisted. I would recommend considering another product.

No Smoke - big failure
This does not work on our 6 burner broilmaster barbecue. I put it directly over one of the burners but no smoke. We soaked the wood chips for half an hour as per instructions and put smoker in a preheated barbecue (400 degrees )well before the food. Would not recommend.

Good quality smoker box
This is a sturdy smoker box of good quality. One thing to remember, though, is that a US grill/bbq which are new to the UK are very different to the usual EU bbq. US grills are really a new idea for us here in the UK but we are absolutely thrilled to bits with our large Brinkmann grill. The smoker box needs to be the correct depth in relation to the make of grill. Hence, why we are going to have to grind down this smoker box to fit our new Brinkmann grill, as it fits on top of the burners and just under the racks. Alaso, we discovered that you have to soak the wood chips for about an hour before using them and then when warmed up on the grill it releases the flavoured smoke - this then smokes the food being cooked. We absolutely love these new type of 'bbqs', which in effect are a cooker and a grill. You really can cook absolutely anything on them, other than just BBQ'ing. I use our heavy cast iron casserole and pop it on the grids, close the lid and hey presto, a great stew is ready for lunch without any attendance.Basically, we have been totally inspired by the US TV show 'Guy's Diners and Dives'....check it out.

Works well but has warped after use. A thicker Guage of metal is needed really

Awesome little fella
This cheap little metal box is awesome. I tend to cook on a gas grill a lot, it's easy and quick, but you do miss the taste of smoke.Simply pop the soaked wood chips of your liking into the little fella, get it on direct heat, and boom.. it's like a wood bbq without the hassle..A great price and the perfect size for my Spirit 300 series, you would be silly not to use it..
