Empowering!
I've ready many books on ADHD, looking for ways to help my little girl. I had become very frustrated with the contradicting information that is out there: Meds- vitamins- nutritution...Is ADHD real?...or was it created by evil money hungry drug companies? WHAT TO DO?!!! I was on the verge of a mental and emotional breakdown when I came accross this book. It contains the best information on ADHD hands down! Dr. Amen's own children have ADHD, and I know that he completely understands the many challenges involved in treating this disease. He is a doctor that actually studies the brains of his patients while he is treating them. Because he has been doing this for many years, he has been able to define 6 different types of ADHD. This is key to knowing so you are able to treat it in the most efficient and effective way. Many doctors believe it is sufficient to treat ADHD with medication alone. Even worse, many wanna-be-doctors and nutritionists believe that ADHD is not real, and that it's symptoms are CAUSED by too much tv, too much sugar/poor nutrition, and poor parenting. Too much tv does affect ADHD. Poor nutrution does affect ADHD. But these things do not cause ADHD. Furthermore, the ignorant, insensitive, and judgmental accusation of "poor parenting" may in fact not be poor parenting. Perhaps the people fond of using this term might try having some compassion towards the individual/parents struggling with ADHD. Perhaps the people fond of using this term might try doing some THOROUGH research and find out that ADHD IS REAL, and caused either genetically, or by an injury to the brain. Parenting a child with ADHD is extremely challenging, and requires an enormous amount of patience and work. Thank heavens I found this book! I no longer feel frustrated, helpless and alone. I feel empowered! I now understand what ADHD is, what's going on in my daughter's brain, and several treatments I can try to help her. Dr. Amen believes you can heal ADHD by treating it consistently with vitamins, nutrition, therapy, exercise, and medication. Many doctors and nutritionists seem to have overlooked the fact that your body and brain are connected! Dr. Amen makes the most sense to me. A brain will work most effectively when your body is healthy and getting a sufficient amount of vitamins, nutrition, and exercise. An individual with ADHD will also more than likely need to take medication, since their brain is not functioning properly. The brain images in this book are fascinating! In my child's case, I have decided to start her on the suggested vitamins and diet to see what happens. Then, if necessary, I will add medication to her treatment. I love my little girl more than anything! She is beautiful, fun, creative, and full of life. I will not allow ADHD to inhibit or define who she is as a person. I'm so grateful for Dr. Amen, and the help he has given to me, my child, and my family.

A "must read" to understand brain health.
This is a wonderfully educational book on brain function. If you, or a member of your family does not fit the normal behavioral mold, this is a great book to read. Dr. Amen identifies 6 areas of the brain that produce specific types of brain dysfunction. This book is not intended to be a self help guide for curing ADD. It IS a wonderful eye-opener as to why human behavior goes awry. When you read the book with an open mind, you will see that healing ADD is definitely not "one treatment works for all." Even though Dr. Amen gives extensive advice on both natural remedies and specific medications for the different types of ADD, and also mental exercises, sometimes finding the right professional help is necessary. You will get good guidelines for seeking professional help.My personal takeaway: It provided a way to see family members differently. As a child, I thought my Mom was just naturally "mean." And she thought I was a "lazy daydreamer." We now both understand that we had two very different types of ADD, and now have a better understanding of how to work around our natural brain function differences.Having lived with untreated ADD all my life, I wish I had met Dr. Amen when he first started with SPECT scans over 20 years ago. In my opinion, this is a wonderful reference book for anyone that is experiencing behavioral difficulties with a family member. It may not be the answer to your specific problem, but it provides an eye-opening journey into brain function, and opens the doors to making more educated decisions. Healing ADD is the book I recommend most often to my friends and acquaintances.

Finally! Scientific Proof - ADD/ADHD is REAL
Dr. Daniel Amen started using biofeedback and behavior modification as an army psychiatrist in the late 80s. While attending a lecture, he became aware of the use of electroencephalograms (EEGs) in treating children with ADD. This gave Dr. Amen a "critical insight: the importance of looking at the brain in different states". Thus Dr. Amen became a pioneer in the field connecting ADD and the use of biofeedback and brain imaging.Soon he was introduced to brain SPECT (single proton emission computed tomography) imaging and started using it in his practice. He tried the SPECT on one of his patients at the time and discovered normal brain activity at rest but decreased activity when problem solving. Treatment with Ritalin corrected the problem AND it was all documented by the tests. The patient was thrilled "Having ADD is not my fault. It's a medical problem, just like someone who needs glasses." Despite continued success, there was still a great deal of resistance to the use of imaging and biofeedback in the medical community. This was frustrating to Dr. Amen and made him angry. "How can we not look at the brain? Cardiologists look at the heart. Orthopedic doctors have bone x-rays. We (psychiatrists) deal with the most complex organ in the body. How can we treat it without having information on how it functions? We are the only medical specialists that never look at the organ we treat!" Thankfully Dr. Amen was not dissuaded from his continued use of SPECT and biofeedback. For each of the 6 types of ADD described by Dr. Amen, there are real life clinical studies as well as SPECT images of actual patients and the varied treatment for each type. Treatment for each of the types includes dietary changes and supplements, physical exercise, pharmacological medications, environmental changes and behavior modification suggestions. The clinical studies include males, females, children, teenagers, adults as well as brain trauma victims. In addition to dealing with the myths, facts and core symptoms of ADD, Dr. Amen also discusses why ADD is increasing in the population and is underdiagnosed and undertreated. In this book, ADD is recognized as a psychological, biological and social disorder. As such Dr. Amen recognizes that treatment must also be on all levels. The nine chapters on optimizing the ADD life offer a plethora of strategies on parenting and family, school, work and sleep. Also discussed is EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), as well as focused breathing, self-hypnosis and ADD coaching.Despite the extensive `science' in this book, it is an easy read. It provides proven practical suggestions to help those with ADD to lead full productive and satisfying lives.

This book is extremely helpful for those who have a loved one with ADD.
This book is written with some medical language, but even if you do not resonate with that, the message is still easily understandable. This book has helped me understand and feel more compassion for those who have ADD.

Grosser Motivationsschub in lesbarem Englisch

Very helpful
If you are dealing with ADD or have a loved one with any form of ADD this book will help you work out some of the symptoms you are encountering.Dr. Amen's clinic in America is far ahead of much of Europe and this book helped us to identify some of the issues which are not generally recognised yet here in mainland Europe. Germany & Austria officially don't recognise this as an adult issue. Many people seem to know ADHD but that is only 1 of 6 versions identified in this book. Very in-depth studies as to the difference, SPECT scans showing each different type's affect on brain function and good indication of causes and cures. He looks to dietary, medical and behaviour management to find solutions. It's not easy reading but comprehensive. You can do Dr. Amen's questionnaire online (Google search Dr. Amen & ADD test) first if just trying to do some basic research. The book will explain more about the online results (test also in the book). This book is a Godsend if you are trying to muddle through with a loved one who is not correctly diagnosed and is walking in condemnation from society for not conforming to their vision of life.
