The Maya

The Maya Civilization Bible
This book is like a big, more-detailed issue of National Geographic; lots of photos and illustrations; wonderful introduction to Maya history (as far as it is known up to now); will need another major revision soon as LiDAR is uncovering new sites faster than scholars can document, let alone excavate, them.

A systematic and readable survey of a remarkable people and civilization
I bought the previous (2015) edition of this book after visiting Yucatan for the first time and seeing a couple of the sites of middle importance--Tulum and Coba. It's worth buying the most recent edition since knowledge of Maya civilization is changing so rapidly with the technological innovation of radar that can see through the vegetation, producing almost map-like images of previously unknown or little known sites, and the ongoing decipherment of the Maya script. My only quibble--at least with the previous edition--had to do with maps and illustrations. I found myself constantly thumbing back through the book to try to find a map that showed the site I was reading about. A list of maps in the table of contents would have helped, as would a general map in the endpapers showing all the sites refered to. The illustrations are good, but it is often hard to interpret them, given the rather strange Maya ideas about illustration. Still, while there can never be enough illustrations, this book is quite generously illustrated.
