Such fun to watch! Timeless too!
This is an almost silent film. It is in colour and does capture its time so well. The backdrop is what England was like in 1967. As a lady friend commented "I had a pair of boots like that! They came from Biba!" The humour is as timeless as a Charlie Chaplin movie, but I think much much slicker. It staggers you when you realise that there is so little dialogue to help it along. It is delivered by the best of those comedians who knew how to do it. Tommy Cooper, Jimmy Edwards, Roy Castle, Eric Sykes, Hattie Jacques, the cast list is almost improbably long, and almost as if they all said "oh yes we want to do that because it will be fun!" This endless parade of the comedians we loved in the late sixties, is wonderful to behold. The director brings in realism too, so that it becomes even more slick and funny. The cast has impeccable timing and that makes the film so wonderful. But then would you expect anything less from such a bunch of talented actors and actresses? I am so glad I have this DVD, it is such fun to watch

The Plank
I bought this following the death of Eric Sykes as I remember seeing it in my youth and howling with laughter. it is a little dated now, and maybe because Iam a little older it doesn't seem quite as funny, more humerous than outright funny. The plot is simple, and a bit 'Laurle and Hardyish'a little predictable, but no less enjoyable. One of the strange things is that I noticed a few street signs and with the miracle of modern invention of Google street view, could actually visit the places were it was filmed, some have hardly changed from the sixties when it was filmed. Anyway, for the couple of quid it cost to buy this dvd it has provided entertainment for 50 mins and no doubt on a wet rainy wintery night with a cozy fire blazing away, it will provide much more entertainment. The list of now famous, and very dead, cast members is long, try and spot a very young Roy Castle. Jim Dale (of Carry On films) is in there as well, although hardly recognizable he is so young. So if you want a gentle laugh and a reminder of what good old fashioned slapstick humour is like, try it. There is no swearing, no rudeness, just good old fashioned fun with two blokes trying to get a long plank of wood back to the house.

The Plank - hilarious old school comed
"The Plank "is a very funny and comic film starring Eric Sykes and Tommy Cooper and a cast of what is now considered comedy legends e.g. Hattie Jacques and Roy Castle among others - it is a simple story about literally the journey of a plank and 2 hapless builders searching for a plank to complete the floor of a new house and is hilarious in its inventiveness. It hails back to an era when comedy was thought-provoking and did not rely on bad language or "toilet humour"!! A really enchanting film that has you chuckling inside afterwards for its simple comedy "cleverness" - great for all ages as the humour is very visual and yet it does not feel as though it has aged (other than it is in black and white and there are far fewer cars on the road!!) I recommend it as a comedy classic that is rightly considered part of our comedy heritage.

Very,Very Funny.
The whole film is old school comedy - in other words, TRULY funny. Modern comedy, with it's foul mouth.have a dig at everyone, insult all - including the audience - and lack of irony (they often call it irony when it's really sarcasm) - could learn a lot about real humour by watching this gem.Eric Sykes was a gifted man and it shows in this short film. The gentle digs at the British public are funny and still have a truth about them that rings true today.I wish that comedy today was more like this - it offends very few, entertains very many and leaves you with a sense that most things can be funny without the need to shout and insult.Thank you Eric Sykes for reminding us that life is funny at times and that it is Ok to smile at everyday life without causing offence.

How could you not love this film?
I remember seeing this film with my father when i was a lad. Seeing it again recently not only brought back fond memories of my dad roaring with laughter but also reminds me what geniuses of comedy Eric Sykes and Tommy Cooper were. Surely the people that reviewed this film badly have lost their sense of humour. Relax guys, see things for what they are. This is a brilliant short comedy with slapstick humour that was just good fun, something that we forget to have nowadays. It doesn't have anything in bad taste, nor is it made to shock or make the viewer feel awkward. Wouldn't it be great if more people today just had fun without upsetting or offending others.
