To make DV888 unresponsive (advanced setup) you need to change pads (you need regular white thin pads) and ball-bearing (best option is cleaned Center Trac C ball-bearing)

It could work for 7 year old, depends how talented and high/grown he or she is. I would rather recommend Spinstar from YoyoFactory, is it more simple and easier to use. It spins and can do tricks as well.
